9/11 Campus Remembrance Ceremony

“Today, on the 24th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, we gather with communities across the Bronx, across New York, and across our nation to pause, reflect, and remember,” Dr. Johnson said. “Each year, this moment does not get easier. Time moves forward, our lives change, yet the memories of that day remain with us – fixed, frozen, and deeply felt in our collective heart.”
He added, “Remembrance is not only about loss—it is about resilience. In the days after 9/11, we witnessed the extraordinary courage of ordinary people. We saw neighbors helping neighbors, strangers comforting one another, and communities choosing unity in the face of fear.”
The program featured a stirring National Anthem performed by Pamela Eatman-Skinner, Director of CUNY Start, along with a poem and reading presented by BCC student veterans Diante Johnson (President, Veteran Affairs Club) and Brandon Jimenez. President Johnson also recognized BCC’s Public Safety Team and welcomed CUNY Senior Executive Director of Public Safety André L. Brown, who spoke about the direct impact of 9/11 on the College and the many members of the BCC community who stepped up to serve in the aftermath.
During the ceremony, the BCC Public Safety Team was presented with the prestigious FBI-LEEDA Agency Trilogy Award, honoring its ongoing commitment to professional development – with every member of its command staff having completed the FBI-LEEDA Trilogy training – and its excellence in law enforcement leadership.
