At BCC, academic advising is a process designed to assist students in making sound and sensible educational plans that are consistent with their personal and professional aspirations. The goal is for students to achieve academic success. Academic advising also helps students graduate in a timely fashion by helping them choose the right course sequence for their chosen curriculum.

Every semester, before registration, students are required to meet with an academic or faculty advisor to review their course selection, and to clarify any confusing degree requirement.

Academic advising at BCC is a collaboration between the Offices of Academic Affairs and Student Development. Student Development counselors are responsible for the advisement and registration of incoming freshmen during the first year. Faculty in the students’ chosen curriculum, along with academic advisors from the Academic Success Center, are responsible for the advisement and registration of incoming transfer students and continuing students.

Academic advising is most effective when done early and often, since it allows for the development of a more meaningful relationship between advisors and students. Therefore, students are strongly encouraged to contact the Academic Success Center, their academic department, or their student development counselor to schedule an appointment early in the semester.
