Commencement Returns to Bronx Community College
The Class of 2014 Graduates With Sunny Skies and Smiles
May 30th, Bronx, New York — Bronx Community College proudly held its 54th Commencement Exercises today. The Class of 2014 gathered on Ohio Field at 10:00 a.m. Three hours and forty-six minutes later they were BCC’s newest alumni. In between, they received diplomas and well-deserved kudos from BCC President Carole M. Berotte Joseph. Other speakers included U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer, Valedictorian Afrah Abisse and Glendalys Salgado, president of the student government.
Some 1900 degrees were or shortly will be awarded to BCC students who graduated between August 2013 and next month. Their ranks include veterans, Phi Kappa Honor Society Members and scholars who come from dozens of countries around the world. Most are the first in their families to graduate from college.
The keynote address was given by Cid Wilson, a nationally recognized financial analyst and Dominican-American community leader and activist. He urged the assembled students and their friends and family "Plan to achieve, but dare to exceed."
This year’s Presidential Medallion went to one of BCC's own: Dr. Herman Stein, currently a full professor and formerly the chair of the BCC Department of Chemistry, where he began as an instructor in 1959, the year that Bronx Community College College opened its doors. Professor Stein was in attendance at BCC’s first Commencement.
