Run the Bronx

CALLING ALL RUNNERS AND FITNESS WALKERS

Saturday, May 3rd is the Day to "Run the Bronx"
The 36th Annual Roscoe C. Brown Jr. Hall of Fame 10k, 5k Run and 2 Mile Walk
Is a Beloved Bronx Borough Tradition

April 1, 2014, Bronx New York — Its roots date back to the late '70s, when distance running was a past-time embraced by serious athletes and die-hard fitness buffs. Bronx Community College's (BCC) third president, Roscoe C. Brown Jr. was among them. A distinguished World War II veteran and member of the legendary group of African-American fighter pilots known as the Tuskegee Airmen, Brown had earned his Ph.D. from New York University in Exercise Physiology and played softball and baseball prior to taking up running in 1977. He would go on to run nine New York City marathons. He also started running the Grand Concourse with a group of BCC colleagues. That's when the idea hit him.

"I thought it be good for the college to have a run in the Bronx," he recalls. "It brings the entire community — young and old — together, gives people a sense of accomplishment and pays tribute to the Hall of Fame, which is part of our beautiful campus."

Last year, with a new name "Run the Bronx," it attracted 1,200 runners and walkers. Celebrating its 36th anniversary with its full name now incorporating that of its founder and long-time booster BCC President Emeritus Roscoe C. Brown Jr., organizers are counting on a turnout at least as big, along with participation from area health and fitness organizations who can help spread the word about the importance of healthy living.

Run the Bronx, The 36th Annual Roscoe C. Brown Jr. Hall of Fame Run and Walk takes place Saturday, May 3th. The official start time is 10 a.m., and the event begins and ends on the historic landmark campus of Bronx Community College, located at 2155 University Avenue, near 181st Street in the Bronx.

This year's run is co-chaired by President Emeritus Brown and Joe Kelleher, Chairman of the Bronx Chamber of Commerce and President of Simone Metro Properties.

Registration fees are as follows:

  • Through April 26th, pre-registration is $25 for the general public and $40 thereafter
  • Registration is free for elementary, intermediate and high school students and for BCC and CUNY students with a valid college ID

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Steuerman Scholarship Fund and the David Hernandez Memorial Scholarship for BCC students.

To register call the 10k hotline at 718-289-5162 or go to http://www.bcc.cuny.edu/Run-the-Bronx.
