Bronx Community College conducted a two-year instructional program for the Federal English Literacy and Civics Education Demonstration Project (EL Civics), sponsored by the United States Department of Edu-
cation. The primary goal of EL Civics was to improve participants’ mastery of English in a context of civics understanding so as to prepare them to function successfully in society. Throughout the two-year period,
the following Civics components were integrated into the curriculum of English Literacy instruction: U.S. Government and Citizenship; Banking and Financial Systems; Health Systems; Housing; Legal Systems; Educational Systems; Community Resources; Parenting and Family Literacy; Career Development; Orient-ation to Postsecondary credit and non-credit training opportunities; and Consumer Education.

Description of activities can be found in EL Civics “How-to” Manual, developed by the project. The man-
ual includes content on managing an EL Civics Program, curriculum development, successful instructional strategies, and information about useful print and media resources. The manual is included on this Web
Site. Pages of the manual can be downloaded separately by clicking on items in the Table of Contents.
Items such as forms and flyers may be edited to adapt to local program use. BCC requests that narrative
content, which can be down-loaded, not be edited or modified but used as is.
