BCC’S Geospatial Center Maps Out Its Future with a Three-year Grant

Funds Will Be Used to Educate and Train Students from Middle School to College in the Expanding Field of Geospatial Technology.

JULY 6, 2017 — Bronx Community College of the City University of New York has received a grant award of $899,490 from the National Science Foundation’s Advanced Technological Educational (NSF-ATE) program.

The grant will fund a three-year “Pathways to Geospatial Technology and Careers” program at the BCC Geospatial Center of the CUNY CREST Institute to provide training and internships for students from middle school to college in the cutting-edge field of geospatial technology — the use of computers to turn data from orbiting satellites into information-rich maps that assist everyone from business developers to urban planners to health professionals to government agencies.  The award will also go towards professional development workshops for educators from schools and colleges with an interest in the field.

“Geospatial technology is a high-growth sector that is facing a critical shortage in skilled labor,” says Professor Sunil Bhaskaran, founding director of the Geospatial Center and principal investigator for the program, who is an internationally-recognized authority in the field. “There is no better time for BCC to make contributions towards a national effort to build the workforce of the future.”

“Pathways to Geospatial Technology and Careers” will also hold annual seminars showcasing student research and interactions with the industry. Such sponsored events and career exhibitions will expose participants to new and exciting opportunities in the geospatial sector.

Since 2010, Professor Bhaskaran and his team of faculty and students have mentored undergraduates in ground-breaking geospatial research, designed courses, authored textbooks, delivered workshops and secured funding from government and industry. This NSF-ATE grant award will help them sustain the momentum of their pioneering effort to establish a regional center of excellence in this far-reaching technology.
