Congressman José Serrano Celebrates 30 Years of Public Service

The City University of New York (CUNY) organized a gala event celebrating 30 years of public service by the Honorable José E. Serrano < http://www.house.gov/serrano/>, representing New York’s 16th Congressional district. Hostos Community College served as host of the December 16 event. On hand to pay tribute to Congressman Serrano were Senator Charles Schumer, Congressman Charles Rangel, and the presidents of CUNY’s three Bronx campuses, including Dr. Carolyn Grubbs Williams of Bronx Community College. She and Vice President George Sanchez presented several gifts on behalf of the College, including a scale model fuel cell-propelled car powered by a photovoltaic cell. “We thought it would be useful for Congressman Serrano to have such a working model available in the event he was involved in discussions about the technology,” said Jim Quigley, the Center for Sustainable Energy’s Acting Director. Models of this kind can be found at http://www.fuelcellstore.com.

Clean Fuels Newsletter Introduced by Keyspan

A newsletter aimed at advancing the New York natural gas vehicle industry was recently introduced by Keypsan <http://www.keyspanenergy.com>, “the largest distributor of natural gas in the Northeast, with 2.5 million gas customers and more than 12,000 employees. KeySpan is also the largest investor-owned electric generator in New York State and operates Long Island Power Authority's electric system serving 1.1 million customers.” Entitled “Up to Speed,” the newsletter helps make the point that as a fuel for vehicles, natural gas is cheaper than gasoline or diesel fuel and burns more cleanly, thus reducing environmental impact. Keyspan is part of the New York and Long Island Clean Cities Program, an initiative of the U.S. Department of Energy <http://www.eere.energy.gov/cleancities/index.html>. For information about Keyspan’s discounts, contact John Rathbun at 516-545-3863. To subscribe to the newsletter, contact Richard Mezic at: rmezic@keyspanenergy.com.

Corrections: In the November issue of this newsletter the name of Adolfo Carrión, Jr., Bronx Borough President, was incorrectly spelled; and the Association for Energy Affordability was inadvertently omitted as a sponsor the Oct 22 conference, "Toward a Sustainable Bronx." The Center regrets these errors.
