Jobs and Scholarship Opportunities in the Emerging Energy Field

Come hear Margaret McIntire and Ernie Damiani of Johnson Controls, Inc. describe careers in the energy services sector and their Company's commitment to this with its own program of internships and scholarships. Margaret, a business development consultant with Johnson Controls, will discuss the emerging field of energy management, covering some of the broad career categories that a person could choose to pursue and talk about some of her experiences in the field. Ernie Damiani, Service Manager for Johnson Controls, Inc. in the New York City Office, will describe some of the specific types of work in the energy management field at Johnson Controls, Inc. and the requirements for securing work with the company. Johnson Controls, Inc. is a Fortune 100 Company, founded in 1885, and employing 120,000 people located in nearly every country worldwide. Johnson Controls, Inc. operates two divisions, an automotive division that manufacturers automobile interiors and batteries, and a building environments division that supplies and services sustainable and environmentally friendly building environment systems.

Margaret earned her BS in Mechanical Engineering from Utah State University in 1981 and has worked in the energy field for the past 23 years. Margaret began her career as a field engineer for the General Electric Company, helping to overhaul and install steam turbine power plants in California, Florida, Jamaica, Venezuela, Spain and Portugal. She supervised energy conservation representatives for the New York State Electric and Gas Corporation (NYSEG), an electric and gas utility based in Binghamton, NY. While at NYSEG Margaret developed a plan to supply all of the steam to heat the SUNY Binghamton campus with waste heat from the utility’s large electric plant located near the Binghamton campus, a type of district heating project based on the district heating systems used in Denmark. Margaret also developed cogeneration projects (generating heat and electricity simultaneously) in the U.S., Canada and Mexico for Trigen Energy Corporation, which is part of the French utility, Lyonnaise des Eau. In her current position with Johnson Controls, Inc., Margaret consults with colleges and universities in the NY City area to help them reduce energy use and improve the educational environment.

Ernie Damiani is the Area Quality Manager for Johnson Controls, Incorporated. Ernie has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Ernie has 21 years experience in the construction and controls industry. As Area Quality Manager for Johnson Controls, Ernie leads the Johnson Controls Team for the states of PA, NJ, WV, and DE in the areas of Employee Development, Quality Control, Process Improvement and Safety. Prior to becoming the Area Quality Manager for Johnson Controls, Ernie was Service Operations Manager for the Johnson Controls New York City office.

The event is sponsored by the Center for Sustainable Energy as part of its continuing series of informational seminars. It is free and open to the public and will take place in Philosophy Hall room 11 on the University Heights campus of Bronx Community College (for directions, see: http://www.bcc.cuny.edu/directions/directions.htm). Should a New York City NESEA Chapter be Re-Established?

The Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA) cordially invites you to a meeting to explore the formation of a new NYC NESEA Chapter. NESEA has received numerous requests in recent months about re-establishing a NYC Chapter. Given the renewed interest in clean energy, rising energy costs, and innovative new technologies, the timing seems ideal to gather like-minded people for the purpose of forming a new chapter.

The Center for Sustainable Energy at Bronx Community College, City University of New York, will host a meeting to explore this opportunity on Friday, October 15 at 2 PM. We appreciate Center Acting Director Jim Quigley's enthusiasm and support to coordinate this meeting as we begin this new NESEA endeavor in the Big Apple! Much good work in the field of sustainable energy is taking place at BCC and throughout the city. We feel fortunate to be welcomed there to hold this discussion.

NESEA Chapters carry forth the mission of NESEA to promote the understanding, development, and adoption of energy conservation and non-polluting, renewable energy technologies.

Our chapters offer the opportunity for members: to become more informed about renewable energy issues; to organize clear and strong voices as clean energy policy advocates; to promote good practices and integration of new technologies; and to provide public education through forums, monthly meetings, or other events. Some chapters are active in participation with the Green Buildings Open House, Tour de Sol, or they attend summer fairs and festivals as a vendor, among other activities. Activities and meetings organized by each chapter are determined by the members who form it. NESEA Headquarters works with you to support your efforts on behalf of clean energy.

We are delighted about the energized interest for a NYC NESEA! Thank you. We hope you can be part of this exciting organizing meeting.

Sustainably yours,
Sandy Thomas, Director NESEA Membership
Alexandra Floratos, Coordinator, NESEA Membership

PS- Please let us know if you are able to attend. Send your RSVP to the Center for Sustainable Energy at Bronx Community College: mail@csebcc.org The Center will send you directions and map. If you are unable to attend but wish to shape the agenda, jot your thoughts in an email to mail@csebcc.org or call Jim Quigley at the Center: 718-289-5334. A follow-up meeting will be held in November or December.
