NYC Science Teachers Learn About Teaching Wind Power

Thirty New York City teachers attended an all day hands-on workshop on February 7, 2005 at Bronx Community College as part of the nationally known Kidwind Project. Teachers and trainer explored the science behind wind energy through a series of hands-on activities, which teach basic science principles. Michael Arquin, Director of the Kidwind Project, demonstrated how a small inexpensive wind turbine could be constructed using materials that can be had from the local hardware store. The teachers formed small groups and built their own wind turbines. Each teacher received a kit containing all the tools, materials and equipment needed to build various types and sizes of wind turbines with their students in a classroom. Instruments and an instruction manual describing how to test the energy output of differently designed wind turbines were also provided.

“This is the first workshop of its type to be conducted in New York City,” said Dr. Reid Strieby, a Senior Associate at BCC’s Center for Sustainable Energy (CSE), who hosted this event. Plans for additional hands-on workshops for Bronx high school and middle school science teachers related to solar energy, hydrogen/fuel cells and alternative fuel vehicles are also in the works. Kidwind (www.kidwind.org) was created by the Wright Center for Science Education at Tufts University. The workshop was sponsored by the New York State Energy Research Development Authority (NYSERDA http://www.nyserda.org/), BCC’s Center for Sustainable Energy and BCC’s Environmental Entrepreneurship Program.

"Dream or Nightmare?"

CSE Director Jim Quigley’s ENN (Environmental News Network http://www.enn.com) Op-Ed piece on two very different future scenarios that he believes could be the outcome of whether or not the world can muster a sufficient sustainable energy agenda. To what kind of a world would he awaken in 2025, two decades from now?" http://www.enn.com/comment.html?id=367
