ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

I.   HIGH SCHOOL & COLLEGE PREP

(GED) High School Equivalency Preparation
Provides the educational training needed to prepare for the High School Equivalency (GED) examination.  Course work is provided in Writing, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Reading Comprehension and test taking skills.  Official GED Exam testing is performed on site.                    

Course Length:  11 Weeks
Hours:     198-203 Hours
Entrance Requirements:  Minimum Reading level 8th grade/7th grade in Math as well as a Pre-enrollment Interview.

Spanish GED:
       
               
Is designed to prepare students, whose native language is Spanish, for the General Equivalency Diploma examination in Spanish. Courses are provided in Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Literature and Computer Literacy.
Course Length: 11 Weeks
Hours 198-203 Hours
Entrance Requirements:   Minimum Reading level 7.5 grade/7.0 grade in Math as well as a Pre-enrollment interview.


II.   ADULT BASIC EDUCATION


(ABE) Adult Basic Education

Improves the basic competencies in Reading, Writing, Math and Verbal Communication; necessary for effective functioning, whether in subsequent education, employment or in students’ daily lives.  Students desiring to enroll in vocational or academic programs at the Bronx EOC may need the preparatory coursework provided by this program.

Course Length:       18 Weeks
Hours:     140 Hours
Entrance Requirements:     Minimum Reading level 5.0 - 6.5 grade/5.0 – 6.5. in Math as well as a Pre-enrollment Interview.

ATTAIN

Supplements the classes within the facility with individual study and attention through the use of ISI software.  The ATTAIN Lab not only bridges the technology divide by incorporating the use of tech in learning but also enhances individual learning while reinforcing the students understanding of class materials.

Vocational Academic Preparation Lab (VAPL)

Provides individualized remediation and contextualized enhancement for students preparing to enter EOC Vocational programs.

Entrance Requirements:  Minimum Reading level 6.5 – 8.5 grade/5.5 – 7.0 grade in Math as well as a Pre-enrollment Interview.

VOCATIONAL/OCCUPATIONAL PROGRAMS

I.   COMPUTER & OFFICE TECHNOLOGY

Executive Assistant

Students will learn Word Processing, Spreadsheet Operations, and the basics of maintaining expense records.  This course will teach Computer Operation, Keyboarding Skills, Word Processing (MS Word), Introduction to Spreadsheet (MS Excel), Introduction to Access, office procedures including use of fax machine, customer service, telephone skills, and filing.  Office protocol and behavior will be an integral component of the course.

Entrance Requirements:  High School Diploma or GED.  Minimum Reading level 9.0/7.5 in Math as well as a Pre-enrollment interview.  With a minimum Keyboarding speed of 15-20 wpm.

II.  ALLIED HEALTH PROGRAMS

Administration Medical Office Specialist

Students will learn specialized medical office duties necessary for employment in private office practices, billing agencies and health care institutions.  Students will understand ICD-9 coding, CPT coding, HCPCS coding, billing, health insurance and the use of the HCFA 1500 form, and managed care issues.  Students will understand medical terminology, patient scheduling, contents of the medical record, patient communication strategies, filing, and an introduction to computerized medical office management software and medical transcription techniques.                          

Course Length:   13 Weeks + 4-6 Week Internship
Hours:   231 Hours
Entrance Requirements:  High School Diploma or GED.   Minimum Reading level 9.0/8.0 in Math as well as a Pre-enrollment Interview.
AMAP (Approved Medication Administration Personnel)

This 4-day course is taught by a Registered Nurse and it prepares and certifies students who work as Direct Care Service Workers to administer medication to patients in accordance to the NYS Office of Mental Retardation and Development Disabilities guidelines.                           

Course Length: 4 days

Entrance Requirements:   High School Diploma or GED.   Minimum Reading level 7.0/5.5 in Math as well as a Pre-enrollment Interview.
Direct Care Service Worker

Prepares students for entry into the workplace as Direct Care Service Workers.  Students are trained to work with mentally disabled, mentally ill, and/or developmentally disabled individuals of all ages, to help them attain independence, individuality, and productivity.  Students obtain their certificates for DCSW, SCIP, and AMAP.  Students also receive their certification in CPR.

Entrance Requirements:   High School Diploma or GED.  Minimum Reading level 7.0/5.5 in Math as well as a Pre-enrollment Interview.

(EMT) Emergency Medical Technician
The program provides instruction and practice in dealing with bleeding, fractures, airway obstruction, cardiac arrest, and emergency childbirth.  Students learn to use and care for common emergency equipment, such as backboards, suction devices, splints, oxygen delivery systems, and stretchers.  Graduates of approved EMT-Basic training programs who pass a written and practical examination administered by the State certifying agency or the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians earn the title of Registered EMT-Basic.  The NYS exam is administered on the last day of the program.

Course Length:   9 Weeks
Hours:     136-140 Hours
Entrance Requirements:   TABE 10.0 Reading/7.5 Math, Valid NYS Driver’s License, & High School Diploma or GED as well as a Pre-enrollment Interview.  Must be able to pass a criminal background check. No misdemeanors or felonies.

Medical Assistant

Students will learn both the clinical and administrative components needed for employment as a Medical Assistant in physicians’ offices, clinics, hospitals, and other health related facilities.  Students will learn the role of the Medical Assistant and the ethical and legal responsibilities of healthcare team.  Topics covered include Infection Control, Safety and Medical Emergencies, assisting with the Physical Examination, Anatomy, Physiology, and Medical Terminology.  Students will learn the techniques necessary to perform Phlebotomy, EKG testing, and other diagnostic and lab procedures.  This course will introduce students to medical office software, appointment scheduling, health insurance, medical billing, ICD-9 and CPT-4 Coding, and receptionist skills.
Course Length:     13-14 Weeks + 4-6 Week Internship  
Hours:         273 Hours
Entrance Requirements:     High School Diploma or GED.  Minimum Reading level 10.0/7.5 in Math as well as a Pre-enrollment Interview.

III.  GENERAL PROGRAMS

Security Registration Training Program

Prepares the student for licensing as a NYS Registered Security Guard.  Students receive the mandatory 8-hour Pre-assignment Training and the 16-hour On the Job Training Certificates.  They also receive training that prepares them to take and pass the NYC Fire Department Certificate of Fitness as a Fire Guard; further training is received in Investigative Memo Writing.  Placement assistance is available upon completion.

Entrance Requirements:  TABE Score Reading 6.5. as well as a Pre-enrollment Interview.  Must meet New York State licensing requirements, which includes fingerprinting and a background check.
