Careers for the Future

Mathematics contributes in fundamental ways to science and engineering, business and finance, medicine, economics and social science. Many jobs require the ability to adapt to change, to perceive patterns and to think mathematically. The need to solve problems has made the study of mathematics the gateway to success. The discipline of mathematics deals with data, measurements, models of natural phenomena, logical analysis, inference and abstraction. It reveals hidden patterns and order that help us to understand and change our world.

Career Opportunities

A great number of professional careers are accessible to students who major in mathematics. These careers demand proficiency in problem-solving and reasoning. Mathematicians design mathematical models used to predict changes in weather patterns and determine the impact of industrial production and its pollutants on the environment. They design statistical and actuarial tables, analyze the stock market, construct and analyze government budgets, conduct research in the sciences, medicine, economics, engineering, computer technology and space exploration and teach at all levels of education.
