The Department
of Modern Languages (MLD) has existed since February 1959 when classes began
at the former site of the Bronx High School of Science. In the fall of 1973
all operations of the College were relocated to its present location in University
Heights on the second floor of Colston Hall. The mission of the Department is
well defined within the mission of the College. Specifically, the goals of the
Modern Language Department are:
· To instill both humanistic and career values in students of diverse ethnic backgrounds in the varied offerings of the College.
· To reinforce basic language skills, a concern of all modern language courses.
· To focus students' learning experiences on the cultural aspects of the courses offered in the department and thus foster self-awareness and respect for one’s own culture.
· To foster cultural/multilingual diversity through class interaction as well as in the Modern Language Workshop where tutors of different languages and cultural backgrounds work with other BCC students.
· To respond to the specific language learning needs of BCC students through specialized courses, such as 15 (Comparative Grammar of Spanish and English) and Spanish 14 (Practical Writing Skills For Hispanic students).
· To reinforce high standards of teaching and learning by adopting the proficiency levels established by the American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages, especially first and second language courses.
· To encourage students to be active in the college community and to participate in the re-chartering of the Spanish, ITALIAN and French Clubs.
· To promote faculty development by encouraging attendance at professional and educational conferences.
