The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years of service in the U.S. Senate.
The purpose of the Foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue research careers in these fields.
Information regarding the online application and faculty representative documents is available on the Foundation's website at www.act.org/goldwater.
- Before entering the names and email addresses of three individuals that will be completing an electronic recommendation for you, you will need to contact your Goldwater Faculty Representative. It is recommended that you do this when you begin your application so that the recommenders will have sufficient time to complete their recommendation. You should secure recommendations from three individuals who know enough about you to assess your personal characteristics, motivation, and potential for a research career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. You should obtain recommendations from:
- Two faculty members who can discuss your potential for a research career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. At least one of these must be a faculty member in your field of study.
- Another individual or faculty member who can attest to your potential. If you have been involved in research, one of your recommendations must come from the individual who supervised your work. The best evaluations are those that come from faculty in your field of study or from individuals who have supervised your work in a research facility. Evaluations from former high school teachers, coaches, or family friends are generally of little value.
Recommenders will be emailed within 24 hours to go online and complete their recommendation. Only the recommender and the Goldwater Faculty Representative will be allowed to view the recommendation. Recommendations must be completed and submitted online by January 30th, or earlier if your institution has established an internal deadline.
It is suggested that you follow-up with each recommender to make sure that the email asking them to complete a recommendation for you was received. Your application will not be considered complete until all three recommenders have submitted their recommendations online.
- Essay – typed and confined to two pages (one side only). Font size may not be smaller than 11 point. The essay will need to be mailed in with the transcripts and other supporting documents. Your essay should discuss a significant issue or problem in your field of study that is of particular interest to you. Your essay must include a description of the issue or problem, discuss an idea for research that could have significant impact on the issue or problem, describe an aspect of the research in which you would be involved, and explain the relevance of the issue or problem to you as a mathematician, scientist, or engineer. The content and style of your essay will be important to the success of your scholarship application. Assume that your reader is knowledgeable in mathematics, science, and engineering, and will have the expertise to read, review, and understand the complexities of your field of specialty. If your essay involves research in which you are or were involved, please indicate if you are or were the sole researcher or if you collaborated with another individual.
Include a bibliography, references, or illustrations, when appropriate, as part of the essay, which will be included in your two pages. Font size may not be smaller than 11 point. Your essay must be typed and confined to two pages (one side only).
Your essay must include the following identifying information at the top of each page:
- Student's Name
- Name of student's college or university
- Student's signature
- Complete all sections of the online Goldwater Scholarship application. Make sure that you have reviewed your answers and printed off a copy of the application for your records before submitting. Your institution may set an internal deadline for submission of all applications.
Your application will become available for your Goldwater Faculty Representative to view as soon as you have selected the name of your current institution and your application status has changed to "in progress". The final application submission has to be done by the Faculty Representative. The online application system does not permit the applicant to directly submit their application to the scholarship committee.
It is your responsibility to submit an original and one copy of the following documents to your Goldwater Faculty Representative:
- Typed essay confined to two pages (one side only) with a font size no smaller than 11 point
- College Transcript(s) from other institutions you have attended. Your Goldwater Faculty Representative will obtain and submit an official transcript from the institution you are currently attending. If you have attended any other college(s), including those attended during high school, then you are responsible for obtaining these transcripts and giving them to your Faculty Representative. If you list courses at other institutions that you were given a grade for, you will need to include a copy of the transcript from that institution with the courses and grades achieved. If these courses are included on your current transcript, they must contain the grade achieved and not just the number of units earned. If no grades are listed for these courses on your current transcript, you will need to get a copy of the transcript from the school from which you took the course.
- If your citizenship status is Permanent Resident, you are required to submit two photo copies of your permanent resident card and a letter of intent to become a U.S. citizen. Your application will not be complete if you do not submit these two documents if you are classified as a Permanent Resident. You must be a U.S. citizen, Permanent Resident or in the case of nominees from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Mariana Islands, a U.S. national to be eligible to apply.
If you are selected as one of the nominees from your institution, your Goldwater Faculty Representative will combine all your required supporting documents and send them to the Goldwater Review Committee by the February 3, 2014 receipt deadline.
The 2014 Goldwater Scholarship Application Deadlines are as follows:

- Nominations January 31, 2014
- Documents Receipt February 3, 2014
Your institution Faculty Representative (Dr. Madeline Bates) may establish an earlier internal deadline for submission of the student application and recommendations.
