Scholarship of the Week
The Columbia/CUNY Health Careers Scholarship
Provided By: Columbia/CUNY Health Careers Scholarship
The Columbia/CUNY Health Careers Scholarship Awards Program, newly renamed The Stanley E. Michels Health Careers Scholarship, was established in 1995 to increase the number of low-income north Manhattan residents who wanted careers in the medical field. The program provides up to $12,500 in financial support for CUNY students who successfully complete its medical laboratory technology, radiological technology, and occupational and physical therapy programs. The Stanley E. Michels Health Careers Scholarship award will help students who because of economic hardship are unable to complete the New York State required 1,500 hours of unpaid clinical internship as a prerequisite to becoming a certified allied health worker.
Columbia University has committed to provide a much needed $1 million in grant funds over a ten year period to sustain the program as part of its community benefits package for the Manhattanville expansion project. These funds will underwrite scholarships for residents of Community Districts 9 & 12 (West Harlem/Hamilton Heights and Washington Heights-Inwood). CUNY has been awarded a $136,000 grant from the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone (UMEZ) extending the program to CUNY students who reside in Community Districts 10 and 11 (Central and East Harlem).
Who is eligible to apply?
Up to 12 awards, each with a maximum amount of $12,500 will be made to assist students who reside in north Manhattan to complete up to 1,500 required hours of internship in a health-related career.
