COLLEGE SENATE

 

The BCC senate has fifty-eight members including fifteen students. Every member of the Student Government Association is also a senator with one vote in the BCC senate. The senate meets four times a semester on Thursdays from 12:15pm-1:45pm in Meister Hall, room 225 - dates are listed on the BCC calendar.

Student Participation in BCC Senate Committees

Executive Committee
(13-14 voting members including 3 students)

Student members:

  • Chairperson or Vice-Chairperson of Senate
  • SGA Vice-President/IOC Chairperson
  • SGA Officer for Legal and Legislative Affairs

Functions include:

  • Prepares agendas for Senate meetings
  • Appoints members as required to standing committees of Senate and other college committees
  • Reviews college budget
  • Takes action when Senate cannot meet

Committee on Governance and Elections
(10 voting members including 3 student members)

Student members:

  • SGA President
  • SGA Vice-President/IOC Chairperson
  • SGA Officer for Legal and Legislative Affairs

Functions include:

  • Recommend changes in BCC Governance Plan
  • Interpret Governance Plan
  • Conduct nominations and elections as specified

Committee on Academic Standing
(23 voting members including 5 students)

Student members:

  • 2 students elected by and from the SGA
  • 3 students who are not members of SGA, to be elected by SGA from the student body

Functions include:

  • Make policy regarding matriculation, attendance, advanced standing, grading requirements, requirements for degrees diplomas and certificates
  • Adjudicate and take final action on student appeals

Curriculum Committee
(25 voting members including 4 students)

Student members:

  • 2 students elected by and from the SGA
  • 3 students who are not members of SGA, to be elected by SGA from the student body

Functions include:

  • Establishes and evaluates curricular requirements for degrees and certificates
  • Evaluates and approves new coursed and curricular, and revisions of existing courses and curricular
  • Evaluates and approves all new programs to be offered by the college
  • Assembles information on and develops procedures for all courses - both degree-credit and equated-credit

Committee on Student Activities
(10 voting members including 5 students)

Student members:

  • SGA President
  • SGA Vice-President/IOC Chairperson
  • SGA Officer for Legal and Legislative Affairs
  • 2 students elected by SGA from the student body

Functions include:

  • Reviews and makes recommendations to Senate on policies and procedures for co-curricular activities
  • Authorizes the use of the name of the College by student groups
  • Recommends student activity programs to SGA
  • Helps college establish and review rules of conduct and regulations in conformity with Article XV Board of Trustees Bylaws

Committee on Space, Facilities, and Physical Plant
(7 voting members including 2 students)

Student members:

  • 2 students elected by SGA from student body

Functions include:

  • Consults and advises regarding allocation of space and facilities within the College

 

Standing Committees with Advisory Functions

Committee on Instruction and Professional Development
(24 voting members including 3 students)

Student members:

  • 3 students elected by the SGA from the student body

Functions include:

  • Canvass students to determine problem areas in the instructional process which may be explored by the committee

Committee on Community Relations and Special Events
(7 voting members including 2 students)

Student members:

  • 2 students elected by the SGA from the student body

Functions include:

  • Consults with and advises administrative officers on ongoing and proposed projects and special events

Committee on Vice Presidents and Deans
(7 voting members including 2 students)

Student members:

  • 2 students elected by and from the SGA

Functions include:

  • Consult with and advise the President on the appointment of persons holding Vice President's and Dean's titles
  • Consult with the President concerning the criteria and procedures to be used by the President in reviewing the performance of Vice Presidents and Deans and their offices
