What is WAC (Writing Across the Curriculum)?

Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) is a pedagogical movement that began in the 1980s to value writing as a method of learning. WAC is an approach to take writing beyond English classrooms and use writing to boost critical thinking skills in all academic disciplines. Studies have shown that writing helps student achievement across the board because it actively engages students. By integrating writing in classes, students understand and retain information better. WAC acknowledges the differences in writing conventions across the disciplines, and believes that students can best learn to write in their areas by practicing those discipline-specific writing conventions.
