Q: What is the Prep Course content about?
Homeostasis, basic chemistry and biochemistry, intro to cells, and intro to organs and systems.
Q: I took the Prep Course before. Do I need to take it again if I want the extra credit?
Yes, the extra credit policy only works when you take the Prep Course during the summer or winter break right before the semester you take BIO 23.
Q: What is the deadline to complete the quizzes to count as extra credit?
The idea of the Prep Course is to get students ready for the first BIO 23 lecture exam. Then, the deadline to complete quizzes to count as extra credit with at least a 77 is the night before the first BIO 23 lecture exam.
Q: How does the extra credit policy work?
A student who scores at least 77 (out of 100) in the Prep Course assessment (quizzes), can use this as credit for up to 10 points (in a 0-100 scale) added to the first lecture exam in BIO 23 (or, 10% of the maximum possible first lecture exam score if the exam is graded using a scale different than a 0-100 scale).
Some examples:
- If a student scores 100 in the Prep Course, 10 points are added to the score of the first lecture exam.
- If a student scores 90 in the Prep Course, 9 points are added to the first lecture exam.
- If a student scores 80 in the Prep Course, 8 points are added to the first lecture exam
- If a student scores 77 in the Prep Course, 7.7 points are added to the first lecture exam.
- If a student scores 76 or lower in the Prep Course, no points are added at all, and the Prep Course will not count as extra credit.
Q: How do instructors know students’ Prep Course grades?
Once instructors give their first lecture exam, they will have access to a list with students who took the Prep Course, and their respective grades. Students do not need to print any proof that they took the course.
Q: For how long is the Prep Course available?
The Prep Course is available throughout the semester.
