NEH Hall of Fame Project

The Hall of Fame for Great Americans Seminars is a professional development program, offering BCC and other CUNY professors and teachers from Hostos Community College and Lehman College in the Bronx opportunities to develop discrete curriculum projects within already existing humanities classes using the Hall of Fame and its honorees as a basis for study and exploration. This National Endowment for the Humanities grant supports the already established Liberal Arts curricula at individual campuses by infusing instruction with new knowledge and innovative classroom projects.

The Hall of Fame for Great Americans represents a unique opportunity for BCC students, half of whom are immigrants or first-generation Americans, to form an appreciation of American history and its heroes. Almost fifty percent of BCC students were born outside of the United States and a larger number speak English as a second language. (One hundred and forty-five countries are represented at BCC alone). Instruction focused upon The Hall of Fame can offer all students an understanding of the values and history of America, and stimulate discussion and reflection on the larger issues of acculturation, identity, and contemporary values.
