A reference desk is located near the entrance in both the Main Library and the Learning Center. These desks are always staffed by professional librarians during all hours when the Library/Learning Center is open. This is where patrons go for assistance in locating library materials, understanding the organization and content of materials they have at hand, requesting library instructional materials (handouts) and submitting interlibrary loan requests. The reference desks also issue METRO Cards.
Reference inquiries may also be made via e-mail by clicking here.
BORROWING: All current students, faculty and staff of any CUNY college may borrow circulating materials from the BCC Library and Learning Center and from any other CUNY Library with the exception of the CUNY Graduate Center (does not lend materials to undergraduates) and the CUNY Law School (extends only access privileges to students and faculty not enrolled there). Students from the University Heights High School are also allowed to borrow materials from the BCC Library and Learning Center only. Alumni and anyone else with the appropriate referrals are allowed access only. Your currently validated CUNYCard is your library card.
LOAN PERIODS: All CUNY faculty have a loan period of 4 weeks. Everyone else has 2 weeks. Reserve materials are strictly on a 3 hour loan period for everyone.
HOLDS ON BOOKS: If a book you want has already been borrowed by someone else, you can request that a "hold" be placed on it. When the book is returned to the library it will be held for you and you will be notified by mail to come and pick it up.
RECALL ON BOOKS:Any item may be recalled, either by the librarians or other faculty members, for various reasons. A recalled item must be returned to the library within the next 10 days, regardless of the due date.
RENEWALS: Library users are entitled to one renewal if no "recall/hold" has been placed on the item. All items must be physically presented at the circulation desk for renewing. Renewals are not accepted via phone or e-mail.
OVERDUE FINES AND LOST BOOKS: The fines for overdue books is 10 cents per day per book, to a maximum of $10 per book. After one week of grace, borrowers will be billed for non-return of books after one overdue notice has been sent. Bills for non-returned and lost books include the replacement cost of the book and a $10 service fee for the processing of the replacement. If the book is later found and returned before the library has replaced it, the cost of the book and the service fee will be refunded. At the time a bill is sent, a LIBRARY HOLD is placed which prohibits a student from registration, graduation, or obtaining transcripts. All library records must be cleared before library hold is removed.
COURTESY DISCHARGE: All circulating books from any CUNY library may be returned to any CUNY library. However, BCC Library does not accept overdue books from any other CUNY libraries. Renewals have to be done at the lending library only.
MICROFORMS:
A large collection of Microforms, mostly magazine back files and newspapers,
is available in the circulation area. Ask at the circulation desk for
assistance.
The Library and Learning Center have computer workstations for public use. Eight of these work stations in the Main Library are reserved exclusively for CUNY+ access. Others may be used for access to a variety of resources including CUNY+, CD-ROMs, and World Wide Web. Limited printing and downloading facilities are now available in the Learning Center.
When necessary, there is a time limit of 45 minutes
for use of the workstations. Also, please note that Library and Learning
Center workstations may be used only for accessing course and research related
materials -- no e-mail, no chat rooms, no computer games, and no pornography.
Materials not owned by the BCC Library and Learning Center can be obtained through interlibrary loan. Forms for requesting material are available at the reference desks. Interlibrary loan requests may also be submitted via e-mail by clicking HERE.
Many items requested may be obtained in two or three weeks if available locally. Some material may take longer. When the requested item has been received, we will notify you and hold the item at the interlibrary loan office(Meister Hall, Room 101). The period and conditions of use are set by the lending library. For any additional information about interlibrary loan services contact: Ms.Brenda Stephens at (718) 289-5433.
An agreement among metropolitan area libraries grant limited access to private collections for researchers who need materials not found in the CUNY and the New York Public Library systems.
A researcher who needs a specific book or journal available only at one of these private libraries may be issued a METRO referral card by a reference librarian. The card does not grant borrowing privileges, only access to the particular private collection to use the specific material listed on the referral card. The length of time that a researcher may use the material and the length of time the card will be valid is determined by the host library.
For more information, inquire at the reference desks.
Photocopy services are available at several locations in the Main Library and in the Learning Center at a cost of 10 cents per copy (coin operated or via vend-a-card). Copying service for microforms is also available at the same coin operated rate in the Main Library. For details, ask at the Circulation Desk.
The reserve
department is located in the Main library. Most or all of the current
text books for classes are available. The loan period is strictly on a
3-hour basis. Faculty may request the purchasing of books to place
on reserve by submitting a book request form.

CAMPUS MAP
The Library and Learning Resources Center at Bronx Community College is
constituted as an instructional department. It is a materials and information
center for student and faculty research and supplements classroom instructions
through both traditional and technological means. In addition to the
print collection, which now numbers in excess of 100,000 volumes, access to
information in alternate formats, including electronic, is now emphasized.
Through computer terminals located in both the Main Library (Meister Hall) and the Learning Resources Center (Sage Hall) the Library provides electronic access to information available on CUNY+, and the Internet, as well as CD-ROMs held locally. The variety of information available electronically is extensive and includes the catalog of library holdings of all CUNY colleges, many periodical indexes, special instructional materials, encyclopedias and much more. This system means that needed material not immediately available in the BCC collection can often be accessed quickly at other locations.
The Learning Resources
Center provides access to many types of media for students and
faculty. In the Learning Resources Center, a great variety of educational
technology is employed to enhance learning--cartridge films, film strips,
tape recordings, video-cassettes, CD-ROMs and others.
The Library
and Learning Resources staff provides reference aid for the individual reader
and prepares bibliographies for specific subject areas. In addition,
the staff offers formal classroom instruction in the use of the library and
in research procedures.
