General Counseling for Academic,
Career, Personal and Related Issues
The mission of the General Counseling Office
is to provide educational, developmental and preventive counseling services
to enable students to meet their academic and career goals while having
the opportunity to develop intellectually and emotionally. The General
Counseling Office is committed to addressing multi-cultural issues encountered
by students. Career inventories and other assessment instruments are administered
to help students to better understand their interests, abilities, values
and psychosocial needs.
The members of the General Counseling Unit provide
academic, career and personal counseling on both an individual and group
basis. Counselors teach the Orientation and Career Development course
(OCD-01) which is required for graduation. In the OCD-01 course, counselors
assist students to develop effective study skills, time management,
and career decision-making skills.
The General Counseling Unit is concerned with
student life on all level to support the personal and educational development
of each student. Its staff of professionally trained counselors assists
a highly diversified student body in academic planning, career exploration,
decision-making and personal growth.
Academic counseling and course advisement are provided
by the counselors in the Department of Student Development in the student’s
first semester. Students are assigned to counselors through registration
in OCD-01 or OCD-11 (Orientation and Career Development courses).
Course advisement for all other students is provided
by academic departments. Faculty advisers are an additional source of
career information for students.
Orientation and Career Development Courses:
OCD-01
This one-semester course is required of all entering
freshmen on all curricula. Students are assigned to counselors in the
Department of Student Development through registration in OCD-01. This
course enables student to develop basic college survival skills in areas
of academic life, setting career goals, time management, analysis of
classroom behavior, assessment of instructor demands and utilization
of library, other college resources and emphasis on students’
understanding of academic environment and its demands on their developing
successful coping and achievement behavior.
OCD-11
In this course it will be explored the comprehensive
examination of the career decision-making process involving relevant
information about self and the world of work. Also, the exploration
of values, skills, abilities, interests, and their relationship to the
job market will be discussed as well as the development of career knowledge
and awareness, including training requirements, life style, employment
opportunities, self-marketing, and job hunting skills.
Counseling sessions may focus on such areas as personal
and educational adjustment, motivational factors influencing educational
performance, and vocational decision-making. Individual and group counseling
services are offered to all students, both day and evening.
Counselors are available by appointment or
on a walk-in basis:
Monday-Thursday, 9:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.
Friday, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
