Weather Station

Coordinator: Prof. Neal Phillip

Welcome to Bronx Community College's Weather Station. The weather station produces real time weather data for the College Community as well as for the general Internet community. Students and researchers can greatly benefit from this resource not only in the study of weather and associated phenomena but also in the related field of Environmental Science/Pollution.

The weather unit was manufactured by Texas Weather Instruments, Dallas, Texas. The station consists of the following features:

  • A rain gauge to measure the amount of rainfall.
  • An outdoor temperature/humidity sensor.
  • A wind vane to measure wind direction.
  • An anemometer to measure wind speed.
  • A Barometric Pressure sensor to read current barometric pressure.
  • A solar radiation sensor to measure the amount of incoming solar radiation.
  • A lightning sensor to measure the number of lightning discharges per minute. The lightning sensor can detect up to 9999 discharges per minute.
  • A 418 MHz transmitter

These are all attached to a grounded 10 ft iron mast on the roof of Roscoe Brown Student Center. Weather data is sent from the transmitter by wireless signal to a digital receiver in Meister Hall (ME716), interfaced with a computer. The computer contains the Weatherview32 software which formats the weather data and then sends it to the BCC web server for availability to the public. The web site is updated with new weather data every five minutes. BCC weather data records are available from the inception of the weather station back in September 2002 through the Data Archives link on the web site.

Since 2004, the weather station has been powered by a solar panel that charges a battery during the day and allows the weather station to run uninterrupted at night and during periods of intense cloud cover when incoming solar is reduced.
