Office of Assessment Mission Statement: 

The Office of Assessment offers a variety of ways to assist faculty and staff in the assessment of General Education, academic courses and programs, and student-success programs. We are committed to making assessment an enlightening evidence-based process to help reveal how well students are performing in their learning and advancing toward their degrees. The Assessment Office is ready and available to present to departments, programs, units and individuals on matters ranging from composing mission statements and learning outcomes to program mapping and developing an assessment cycle.


  1. Create a campus-wide culture of academic and student-success assessment.
  2. Develop systematic methods of assessment and reporting.
  3. Provide continual guidance and support in all areas of assessment.


The work of the Office of Assessment aligns to several of Bronx Community College’s 2015-2020 Strategic Goals: 1.1, 3.1, 5.1, 5.3, and 7.1.



The Assessment Council supports campus-wide Student Learning Outcomes assessment of academic programs, courses, and General Education by guiding departments in the development and management of the ongoing practice of assessment.

BCC’s Assessment Council comprises a faculty member from each of the College’s 14 academic departments, the Writing Across the Curriculum program coordinator, and 2 staff members from the library.

  • Implement best practices for the assessment of General Education, academic programs, and courses based on Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs).
  • Develop assessment tools, measures, and recommendations for improvement.
  • Develop assessment practices that contribute to improvements of student learning and success.
  • Encourage and foster collaboration across departments for interdisciplinary partnerships.

Appointed by the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Council is comprised of a FT faculty member from each Academic Department, Library, and Writing Across the Curriculum.  Each faculty member serves as a designated “Assessment Coordinator,” charged with the following responsibilities:

  • Must attend meetings of the Assessment Council and receive continuous software training.
  • Engage in the alignment of the Council’s mission and objectives to the College’s Strategic Plan, Mission & Goals.
  • Facilitate the processes of General Education, program, and course assessment within their departments and assist colleagues on assessment practices.
  • Advocate faculty-driven assessment outcomes that are S.M.A.R.T.—Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic & Timely.
  • Keep chairpersons and colleagues updated on campus-wide and departmental assessment matters.
  • Prepare and submit assessment reports in consultation with stakeholders—department chair, colleagues, course coordinators.
  • Share in the rotation of serving on the Council’s evaluation team, reviewing assessment reports, and providing feedback.
  • Lead in the organization of BCC’s annual Assessment Day along with the Assessment Team and Office of Institutional Research.

Academic Assessment Calendar

Spring 2019


  • Program assessment status update due March 12th. Assessment Council Coordinators provide brief status report (presentation to the council) on their program assessment process.
  • Fall 2018 Course assessment reports due March 12th. Course assessments should be completed and entered into TaskStream.  Online/hybrid distinctions should be noted.


  • Assessment Council Coordinators meet with department faculty/coordinators to ensure progress on the course and program-level assessment plans.
  • Spring 2019 Course assessment commitments due May 7th.
  • Program assessment reports completed and submitted to TaskStream, May 28th.

Fall 2019


  • Program assessment commitments due October 15th. Program assessments should be discussed and approved at the department level before submission to Assessment Office.
  • Spring 2019 Course assessment reports due October 15th. Course assessments should be completed and entered into TaskStream.  Online/hybrid distinctions should be noted.

Assessment is the collecting and analyzing of direct and indirect evidence to improve student learning and the student experience at Bronx Community College.

Direct, Indirect, Summative and Formative Assessment… Types of Assessment.


  • Assessment should not be burdensome.  We allow it to emerge as a natural process of teaching and our ongoing discovery of what works best for students.
  • Assessment helps us base decisions about curriculum, pedagogy, advising, and student support upon the best possible data we can gather.
  • Assessment is dynamic research.  It is not intended to produce a theory of learning as it is to inform and produce local action.

General Education (CUNY Pathways)

The College is committed to ensuring academic rigor across all programs, disciplines, and instructional modalities.  The CUNY-wide shift to the Pathways curriculum in 2013 was a catalyst for the College to revisit our approach to General Education requirements, which were first implemented in 2004. We have since (in 2016) adopted the Pathways model of course-based Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) as the framework for assessing General Education proficiencies. This shift to the SLO model, coupled with course-level and program-level assessment, has in turn enabled the College to ensure that students are receiving rigorous learning experiences across departments, programs, and disciplines.

BCC has a longstanding history of requiring all degree students to complete a foundation of courses that emphasize essential skills and knowledge, including courses in the humanities, social sciences, mathematics and natural sciences.  As part of their course requirements, the percentage of liberal arts and science courses in all degree programs are in compliance with the New York State Education guidelines for associate degrees.
