Building Momentum: Admissions Strategy Driving Access, Growth, and Opportunity

That momentum was on full display at BCC’s recent Open House. Drawing more than 200 prospective students and families, the event reflected a renewed energy on campus – one driven by a commitment to deeper community engagement and a more expansive approach to recruitment.
“We’re not just waiting for students to find us,” Perez explains. “We’re meeting them where they are – earlier, more intentionally, and with a clearer sense of what BCC can offer.”
A key example is a new and emerging partnership with Yonkers Public Schools. Through a developing memorandum of understanding, BCC is working directly with district leadership to connect with high school seniors earlier in their college decision-making process. This formalized pipeline marks a significant shift from past outreach efforts, positioning BCC as a visible and viable option for students beyond the Bronx.
The partnership is already taking shape through targeted collaborations, including with Saunders Trades and Technical High School. With its strong automotive program – an offering unique within CUNY – BCC is creating a direct pathway for students to continue their technical education at the college level. On-site admissions events, including same-day applications and acceptances, are designed to both streamline access and elevate the college-going experience.
“We want students to feel proud choosing BCC,” Perez says. “Even being on their list matters – and once we understand why they’re considering us, we can build from there.”
These efforts are yielding measurable results. BCC has seen a 13 percent increase in spring enrollment and is currently outperforming CUNY’s long-term projections – an indicator that its strategy is not only working, but accelerating.
Technology is also playing a critical role. The implementation of a new customer relationship management system, Slate, allows the admissions team to engage students in more personalized and timely ways – from automated communications to video outreach and targeted “nudge” campaigns. The result is a more responsive and modern admissions experience that meets students where they are.
Equally important is a growing focus on adult learners and working students. Expanded online programming including evening and weekend offerings, along with flexible entry points such as certificate and non-degree options, reflect a broader shift toward accessibility and lifelong learning.
For Perez, a Bronx native, the work is deeply personal.
“I see myself in the students we serve,” he says. “This is about opening doors – for individuals, for families, and for the community.”
With a strong team behind him and a shared commitment across the College, Perez views admissions as the front line of BCC’s mission. As the institution continues to expand its reach and refine its approach, one main premise is emerging: the pathway to opportunity is growing wider – and more intentional – than ever before.
