Bronx Community College recently welcomed approximately 70–80 young people from Phipps Neighborhoods to campus for a Project-Based Learning Culminating Event celebrating their creativity, growth and accomplishments during the summer.

Participants in Phipps Neighborhoods’ Summer Youth Employment Program, primarily 14 and 15 years old, presented original public service announcements and marketing campaigns developed through collaborative, project-based learning. A panel of judges evaluated the presentations on creativity, communication, teamwork, innovation, problem-solving and overall effectiveness.

For many participants, the event also marked their first visit to a college campus. Students toured BCC, explored the campus and gained a firsthand look at college life, providing an opportunity to consider higher education as part of their future.

The event highlighted the alignment between Phipps Neighborhoods and BCC in creating pathways to education, workforce development and long-term success for young people in the Bronx. BCC provided logistical and event support while creating a welcoming campus experience for participants.

The event marked another step in the growing partnership between Phipps Neighborhoods and BCC, with both organizations looking to expand opportunities for Bronx youth. President Larry D. Johnson Jr., who serves on the board of the Phipps Organization, has expressed his support for strengthening the partnership.

The collaboration connects young people’s summer workforce experiences with exposure to higher education and provides opportunities for them to engage with BCC as a resource for their future.
