Basketball Player Abraham Richter Named 2025 Kalief Browder Memorial Scholarship Recipient
BCC Computer Science student and basketball player Abraham Richter has been named the recipient of the 2025 Kalief Browder Memorial Scholarship. Richter, who had a brush with law enforcement at the age of 10 (he’s now 27) in the apartment building where he lived with his single mom, has been attending BCC in hopes of creating a brighter future.
“The events of my childhood definitely shaped me,” Richter said. “Because of what I went through, I am a more cautious person. And then, when my father passed away, it took me a while before I could get back on track to pursue my education.”
Richter played basketball at Cardozo High School and at a boarding school in Connecticut. When he came to BCC to get his i.d., he had a chance encounter with Assistant Coach Andre Scott, who asked him if he played basketball.” When I said yes, he immediately called Head Coach Warren, who was in a meeting at the time. Coach Andre told him I was 6’5”, and Coach Warren said, ‘I’ll be right over’”.
Richter will attend a scouting event in April, with thoughts of playing for a four-year college. But, for now, he is enjoying attending BCC, playing for the Broncos, playing video games and reading about philosophy and history in his spare time. After this semester, Richter will be just two courses shy of completing the coursework for his major.
Head Men’s Basketball Coach Warren Thompson said, “Abraham is an extremely hard worker, excellent student and most of all, a wonderful person. On numerous occasions, Abraham has shown leadership and mentorship to our team and his teammates. Throughout the season, Abraham stood out as a pillar of support and motivation, which we all came to rely on. I am so proud that he was selected as the Kalief Browder Scholarship award winner.”
