In 2014, I arrived in the United States from Russia with a small suitcase, barely any money, and a big dream: to study criminal justice at John Jay College. At 20 years old, I was a recent graduate of a business administration program in Russia, but my passion for law and justice had always been stronger. During my studies back home, I searched online for the best colleges in the United States specializing in criminal justice, and John Jay stood out as the one I aspired to attend.

My journey to achieve this goal was far from easy. When I arrived in New York City, I had no family, no friends, and hardly any English skills. With limited resources and only a travel visa, I faced significant challenges, including spending a few nights in Central Park when I couldn’t afford shelter. Yet, these hardships fueled my determination. I began working tirelessly—starting as a babysitter, housekeeper, and dishwasher—eventually earning my way to enroll at Bronx Community College, which had a criminal justice program affiliated with John Jay College.

As a student at Bronx Community College, I excelled academically and sought opportunities to further enrich my education. One such opportunity was the Global Citizenship Alliance seminar in Salzburg, Austria, a special study abroad program focused on addressing global issues. I participated in a competition for this seminar and was honored to win the prize, which would have allowed me to engage with a global network of individuals passionate about international problems. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I was unable to attend, but I remain incredibly grateful for the opportunity. This experience reinforced my belief in the importance of being a global citizen and understanding issues that affect the entire world.

During my time at Bronx Community College, I was fortunate to be mentored by Dr. Crystal Rodriguez, a professor who deeply influenced my personal and professional growth. Her guidance helped me see my potential and the various opportunities available to me. She taught me to navigate the complex choices I faced and was instrumental in shaping my path toward a career in law enforcement and justice. Dr. Rodriguez’s support was invaluable, and she remains one of my greatest inspirations.

Transitioning to John Jay College marked a turning point in my life. This institution represented more than an academic opportunity; it was the fulfillment of a long-held dream. As a first-generation immigrant and a full-time student, I balanced my studies with my service in the military and later as a police officer with the NYPD. This experience taught me resilience, time management, and the importance of perseverance.

Looking to the future, my continuing education goals include pursuing a master’s degree in forensic psychology. I am fascinated by the intersection of psychology and law, and I want to deepen my understanding of human behavior to better address issues such as human trafficking and child exploitation. My career aspiration is to join a federal agency, such as the Secret Service or Homeland Security Investigations, where I can dedicate my skills and passion to combating these heinous crimes.

Law enforcement is not just a job for me—it is my calling. I have never worked a day for money or personal gain; my motivation has always been rooted in justice and service. I believe no human has the right to exploit another, and I am committed to dedicating my life to fighting for those who cannot fight for themselves. This is not just a professional goal but a personal mission to make the world a better, safer place.

In closing, I am incredibly proud of how far I have come and deeply grateful for the opportunities I have been afforded. From arriving in the U.S. as a young immigrant with a dream to writing this statement today, I am reminded that perseverance and dedication can overcome even the most daunting obstacles.

 Advice to current BCC students:

My advice to current students is to set goals that are bigger than yourself. The world will not remember you for your personal achievements but for the contributions you make to it. Believe in yourself, especially when no one else does. Stay true to who you are but always remain curious and open-minded. Never stop learning. Even when you think you know something, it’s better to listen to others because everyone has something to teach you. The moment you say, “I know that” is the moment you stop growing. Organize your time and prioritize what is truly important to you. Put yourself first when it comes to pursuing your dreams, because when you take care of yourself, you will be better equipped to care of your loved ones. Use your time wisely and productively. Don’t waste it on things, people, or distractions that don’t matter. Be mindful of your surroundings and the information you allow into your life. Choose carefully what you listen to, watch, and absorb, because the world is full of noise. Stay focused on what truly matters.
