A Day of Growth Mindset Showcases for Students, Faculty and Staff
On March 31, 2023, Bronx Community College (BCC) hosted an engaging Growth Mindset Showcase, featuring separate agendas for students and faculty/staff. The day began with a welcome address by Dr. Luis Montenegro, Dean of Academic Affairs at BCC, followed by welcomes from Dr. Seher Atamturktur, Co-PI for the S-Stem Grant, and Tica Frazer, Co-PI of the Title V grant. Dr. Miguel Powers led the student activity titled “The Power of Growth: Embracing a Mindset for Success.” assisted by BCC First Year Program (FYP) Peer Mentor Coordinator Anahi Grande and Peer Mentors Lesly Almanzar, Ayana Perkins and Nicole Diaz who also serve as a S-STEM Scholar. Afterward, students enjoyed a lunch break and a Growth Mindset LibGuide presentation by Emma Antobam-Ntekudzi from the BCC Library.
For faculty and staff, the event continued in the afternoon with an activity by Dr. Miguel Powers, titled “Promoting Learning Mindsets to Foster Motivation and Purpose.” Following this, participants attended a series of faculty and staff strategy sessions. Giulia Guarnieri discussed fostering self-awareness through community building during the pandemic, while Tica Frazer and Anahi Grande shared insights about mindsets for success in BCC’s (FYP). This presentation outlined how the (FYP) has integrated Mindset for Success throughout the program as an institutional priority and an important pillar for student success. A student panel, moderated by Senior Peer Mentor, Ayana Perkins, discussed the student experience in relation to a growth mindset.
The event concluded with a faculty and staff plenary on the CUNY-wide mindset initiative, featuring speakers from Hostos Community College, Kingsborough Community College, and CUNY Central Office of Academic Affairs. This event was sponsored by the NSF S-Stem Grant and Title V Avanzando: First Year Success.
