Professor Carlson teaches Public Speaking and Interpersonal Communication at Bronx Community College, including Honors sections of both courses. In 2020, he was awarded the Certificate of Continuous Employment (CCE).
Before joining BCC, Professor Carlson developed and directed the university-wide introductory communication course at the University of Texas at Dallas. Prior to UT Dallas, he was a professor at Collin College, where in 2014 he was named Professor of the Year for the Honors Institute.
At BCC, Professor Carlson currently serves on the Technology Oversight Committee and has previously served on the CUNY University Faculty Senate and the Student Technology Fee Committee. He also coordinates the departmental website. His office is a designated Safe Space.
Professor Carlson’s research and teaching interests include Invitational Rhetoric, current developments and trends in the Basic Course, and in-person friendships among college students in the post-pandemic world, the topic of his 2026 sabbatical research.
He holds a B.A. with a double major in Communication and English Literature from Lindenwood College and an M.S. in Communication from Miami University.
