Socas, John

John received his MFA at the National Theatre Conservatory and PhD. at New York University. His creative work has been presented in the U.S. at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, the Lamb’s Theatre, Soho Rep, Jacob’s Pillow, the Guggenheim Museum, PS 122, George St. Playhouse, and Denver Center for the Performing Arts, and internationally at the We Love Dance Festival in Tokyo, Japan, and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. John teaches and serves as the Director of the Theatre Workshop at BCC and was recently honored by the Student Government Association with an award for being an “Outstanding Club Advisor.” With the Theatre Workshop, he’s directed over thirty plays including classical plays by Shakespeare, Wilde, and Molière and modern plays set in Rwanda, rural Maine and South-Central LA. In Fall, 2020 and Spring, 2021, he devised two films The Essential Bronx: COVID Stories Parts 1 and 2 with the amazingly talented Dr. Carmen Meyers, Gerson Legend, and the students of Theatre Workshop. Also last year, John collaborated with the Gingold Theatrical Group’s Speakers’ Corner Writers group to write his play Active Shooter. He’s been honored for his work in theatre with the “Spirit of the Fringe Award” at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the “John Golden Incentive Award for Playwriting” (CUNY), and the “Mid-Career Achievement Award” from the National Communication Association. For the past 15 years he has advanced international literacy through a not-for-profit he co-founded and directs, Global Empowerment Theatre (GET). With GET, he’s led devised theatre workshops with children in impoverished communities in East Africa and India.
