Herman Twiggs is an adjunct Lecturer of Human Services and Sociology in the Social Sciences Department at Bronx Community College (BCC), CUNY. He began teaching at BCC in 2004, as an educator in a helping profession, to which he was very familiar with and holds great passion towards the success of BCC students. As an alumnus of BCC he understands the colleges culture, academic challenges, as well as the campus life of our students.
In addition to being an educator, professor Twiggs is an experienced social service professional who began his career as an entry-level case manager/social worker. Beginning his career with limited resources, he climbed his way to success by continuing to learn in a challenging field, increasing his knowledge-base and skills, building a strong network of like-minded professionals, which ultimately led to levels of success in his career trajectory. The diligent use of these strategies have elevated him to several directorships, within public, private and not-for-profit organizations.
Presently, Prof. Twiggs is a Director of Programs, at a large social service organization, located in four (4) of the five boroughs of NYC. His affiliations and networking have allowed him to provide many internships to interested BCC students, many leading to gainful employment opportunities.
His primary teaching philosophy as the course unfolds, focuses from the historical and theorical perspectives. Once the fundamental concepts and purpose of the course are understood by students, the pedagogy will gradually shift to student-centered learning, utilizing many collaborative and interactive teaching styles where real-time scenarios and best-practice teaching methods are introduced. These methods provide students with a realistic view and understanding of what actually occurs within a human service setting and/ or arena.
Professor Twiggs is a native New Yorker, born and raised in Harlem N.Y., however, his family history and heritage stems from the South-Eastern region of the U.S. (South Carolina/ Georgia).
He is a lifelong athlete, exceling in basketball at all community levels, as well as track and field (440 meter relay). - He continues to coach youth basketball in his native Harlem.
