Interested in Transferring to a Four-Year College? Get to Know Edwin Roman
Everybody should love their job as much as BCC’s Academic and Transfer Resources Coordinator Edwin Roman. “I’ve been here 22 years,” Roman said. “I have the most amazing job. I get to meet amazing students, which of course is the best part about my role.”
For more than two decades, Roman has been advising BCC students on degrees to pursue and courses to take to transfer to four-year colleges. From workshops on essay writing, to securing financial assistance and scholarships and completing the transfer application, Roman prides himself on being accessible to students for resources and information.
Roman offers an online Transfer Services Q&A session for students – a Virtual Counter – every Monday evening from 7-9 p.m. and meetings by appointment on Saturday mornings, 9 a.m. – Noon, to allow maximum flexibility. Each year, the Office of Transfer Services assists nearly 2,000 students interested in the transfer process.
Roman said he is continually in awe of the resilience he sees in students. Currently, he is working with a student who is homeless and yet, despite the circumstances, has been able to maintain a high GPA. He has helped hundreds of high-achieving students apply and get accepted to top-tier private colleges (NYU, Sarah Lawrence, Fordham and more) across the country. He also works closely with students who move on to schools such as Lehman College, John Jay, or a SUNY school where BCC has articulation agreements, or to further their education at a joint-degree institution.
In his spare time, Roman is an artist, photographer and blogger. He has self-published two photography books with street photography in NYC and Brooklyn and illustrated a children’s book titled, “The Adventures of Symmy the Square,” a Geometry book for young readers. He also is BCC’s LGBTQI+ Resource Room adviser and in the process of planning for Gaypril with Dr. Emalinda McSpadden and LGBTQI+ Resource Room students. (This year, BCC will sponsor the CUNY-wide LGBTQI+ Conference on Friday, April 4.)
Prior to landing at BCC, Roman’s professional experiences included managing college-bound programs at Covenant House in the Bronx, followed by Cornell University. “I grew up just across the river from BCC and could see the College from his bedroom window,” Roman added.
