Meet BCC’s 2025 Valedictorian: Genesis Malvely Nicacio Gomez, Eight Years After Emigrating from the Dominican Republic
Genesis Malvely Nicacio Gomez has been named Bronx Community College’s 2025 Valedictorian — a remarkable milestone in a journey that began eight years ago when her family immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic.
“I came here when I was 13 with my older sister Malvin, our mom, and another sibling. Adapting to a new country, language, and culture came with its struggles,” Genesis said. “But with unwavering support from teachers and my family, I pushed through.”
In fact, Genesis excelled – making the honor roll from eighth grade through her senior year of high school. At BCC, she earned straight A’s studying Liberal Arts and Sciences and Early Childhood Education.
“My goal is to become a Spanish teacher and advocate for inclusive education. I was so appreciative of all the support I received from teachers in high school and then at BCC. I am passionate about wanting to give back and making life just a bit easier for others who may be going through challenges similar to what I went through,” she said.
Through thick and thin, Genesis and Malvin have remained by each others’ side. Malvin graduated from BCC in 2024 and is continuing her education at Lehman College, where Genesis is joining her; they are both pursuing master’s degrees in Early Childhood Education.
“I couldn’t have done it without her,” Genesis said, tears in her eyes. “No, trust me, I couldn’t have done it without her,” Malvin replied.
Genesis looks back at her time at BCC with deep appreciation. “The best part about BCC is the people,” Genesis shared. “The professors are incredible. I’m endlessly grateful.”
Balancing academics with work has kept Genesis’s schedule hectic. She remains committed to her studies and babysits to help support her family’s household. She also finds joy in painting, spending time in nature, and bonding with her beloved pet cockatoo, Luna.
Asked what advice she’d give her younger self, Genesis didn’t hesitate: “The process feels overwhelming when you’re in it, but those challenges are what make you stronger. Have faith. Never give up.”
