NYU Alumni Gather for “Pilgrimage to the Heights”: A Welcome Back to the Old NYU Campus in the Bronx
“Pilgrimage to The Heights” on April 12, 2024 was a gathering of NYU alumni paying respect to NYU’s more than 75 year presence at our University Heights Campus. NYU President Linda G. Mills welcomed alumni back, and Samuel White, great grandson of Heights architect Stanford White, talked about Gould Memorial Library and the Hall of Fame of Great Americans, the architectural marvels Stanford White created. Fernando Ferrer, a 1972 NYU alum and former Bronx Borough President, also spoke, saying how the Heights changed his life, as well as Marc Weisenfreund, a 1967 alum and organizer of the Pilgrimage.
From 1898 – June, 1973, Bronx Community College was the home of NYU University’s College of Arts and Science (now NYU’s College of Arts & Science), and the School of Engineering. BCC’s campus, a National Historic site designed by Stanford White in the last years of the 19th Century, includes Gould Memorial Library (still bearing the inscription “Library of New York University”), flanked by Philosophy Hall, Language Hall, and the original Hall of Fame for Great Americans, which was the basis for all subsequent “Hall of Fame” exhibits throughout the world.
