Cierra McGruderNew and returning students convened on Thursday, February 6 in the Roscoe Brown Student Center Playhouse to kick off BCC’s Spring 2025 Student Convocation. Keynote Speaker and 2019 BCC alum Cierra McGruder shared her story of growing up with a young teen single mom in St. Louis, MO, facing adversity, injustice and hearing loss, and finally making her way to BCC, where she developed a passion for social work.

McGruder spoke candidly about her ups and downs and credited BCC for laying the foundation for her success, enabling her to continue her education at NYU for her bachelor’s degree and Columbia University for her master’s. She currently resides in Rhode Island and is dedicated to her life work supporting individuals as they navigate the complexities of severe mental illness and substance abuse.

“BCC played a pivotal role in shaping the person I am today,” said McGruder. “I hope that my story will inspire you to embrace every opportunity ahead.

Associate Director of the Office of Student Life Tiffany Dubon-Yard kicked off the Convocation with remarks welcoming Broncos for a new semester of growth and success. Additional remarks celebrating the new semester were delivered by Student Government Association (SGA) Vice President John Thomas Lorino; Interim BCC President Dr. Milton Santiago, and Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Luis Montenegro.

“Ask questions. Seek mentorship. And most importantly, believe in yourself. Your journey here is unique. But you are never alone in it,” Interim BCC President Dr. Milton Santiago said.

Dr. Montenegro told students they are about to embark on a journey of both personal and professional growth, but their success depends on the choices they make. “To expand your horizons, you need to narrow your focus,” he said.

An original and powerful poem titled “Paper” was performed by student Karla Alvarez, and the hymn Precious Lord Take My Hand was performed by student Donald Flowers. Convocation concluded with SGA and Men’s Empowerment Network members leading the Commitment Pledge, a Convocation tradition aimed at uniting students in a promise of achievement.
