Stanford White and the Team that Built Gould Memorial Library
A Bronx Community College Historic Preservation Discussion
with Samuel White, FAIA; LEED A.P

Sam WhiteGould Memorial Library, the last surviving major public building designed by Stanford White, emerged from a collaboration between a visionary educator, a generous donor, and two artists. Collaborations in architecture can be fraught, and while the result was a great work of architecture, the design and construction of the library was no exception.

Today, Gould forms the centerpiece of the landmark campus of Bronx Community College, but the story begins in 1895 when NYU moved their undergraduate school to University Heights.

Samuel White, a great grandson of Stanford, will discuss the building process that was rarely linear and occasionally messy. He will also provide an update on the current state of the building, including the status of the roof restoration.
