Standing Against Domestic Violence: BCC Launches Emergency Fund at Campus Vigil

Organized by Womxn Up!, the Office of Student Diversity Initiatives and the Office of Student Life, the gathering brought together students, faculty, staff, and local organizations dedicated to breaking the silence surrounding domestic abuse. Attendees, dressed in purple – the color symbolizing domestic violence awareness – filled the quad with chants of solidarity: “Break the silence. No more violence,” and “Hey hey, ho ho, domestic violence has to go.”
Representatives from Bronx Health Link and the National Dominican Women’s Caucus shared valuable information and resources, helping connect attendees with community services that support victims and survivors. A self-defense demonstration also equipped participants with practical tools to enhance their personal safety.
The emergency fund, inspired by the memory of Anthonella Contreras Linarez, a beloved BCC alumna, will provide vital assistance to students in crisis. Her family, who attended the event, expressed gratitude for the support and urged others to seek help when needed.
“Never be afraid to ask for help,” said Marlenis Contreras Linarez, Anthonella’s sister.
Through events like this, BCC continues its commitment to raising awareness, promoting prevention, and supporting survivors of domestic violence – ensuring that compassion, education, and community action drive meaningful change.
