Credits Her Work Ethic to Hispanic Heritage; Urges Students to Persevere and Stay the Course

karines reyes -lunch with leadersNew York State Assemblymember Karines Reyes returned to her alma mater, Bronx Community College, last month as the featured guest for the Lunch with Leaders series. Speaking to an audience of more than 50 prospective and current nursing students, Reyes shared her journey from nursing student to oncology nurse to elected official, offering candid insights and powerful encouragement.

Reyes, who currently serves as Chair of the New York State Assembly and Senate Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force, spoke passionately about the impact of nursing on her life and its transformative potential. Her visit was part of a series of events celebrating Latinx Heritage Month, organized by BCC’s Offices of Student Diversity Initiatives and Student Life.

“When I enrolled at BCC, I was struggling financially—really struggling,” she recalled. “But once I became a nurse, I doubled, even tripled my salary. Think about what that means for your family, and what you’re willing to do to achieve that reality.”

She praised BCC’s nursing program for allowing her to work during the day while completing clinicals in the evening. The flexibility, combined with rigorous training, provided her with the tools to thrive in a demanding profession.

“All of you in the nursing program know how tough and competitive it is. But trust me—that challenge will make you a better nurse,” Reyes told the students. “When I started working, I was more prepared than nurses from Ivy League schools. Clinically, they couldn’t match the hands-on training I received at BCC.”

Reyes also credited her strong work ethic to her Hispanic heritage. “I work hard. I lead with principle, honesty, and respect. I can’t control the rest of the world—but I can control me,” she said.

During the event, students engaged directly with Reyes, asking questions and learning more about current offerings in BCC’s Department of Nursing & Allied Health Sciences.

“You have to stick with it,” Reyes encouraged. “Your goals are within reach. You don’t realize how valuable you are. There is a nursing shortage — they need you. Ask for what you want, and don’t give up.”
