From Work-Study Student to IT Assistant Director: Albania Nicasio Now Leads BCC’s Training Office

  Update   •

albania-nicasioWhen students, faculty, or staff need training on any technical topic—from Excel to newly deployed Bronx Community College applications – BCC alumna Albania Nicasio is ready to help. She began her journey in the College’s IT department as a work-study student in 1994. Today, she leads the IT Training Office, where an average of 200 training sessions are delivered each month.

Albania’s passion for teaching is matched by her deep appreciation for Bronx Community College itself.
“I have always loved the collegiality – the way people treat each other,” she said. “Everybody helps everybody. The support I received as a student is the same support I now receive as a staff member.”

BCC was the first two-year college in the CUNY system to establish a dedicated training office. Trainings are offered Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm both online and in person. Sessions can be booked through the BCC website using this link here or the BCC app by selecting “IT Training”. Albania notes that requests can also be submitted for technologies or platforms not currently listed and can be accommodated based on users’ schedules.

A Latina immigrant who came to the United States in 1991, Albania earned her associate degree in Computer Science from BCC before completing her bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at Lehman College. She went on to earn two master’s degrees: an MBA with a concentration in Finance from Lehman College and a Master’s degree in Data Analytics from CUNY’s School of Professional Studies.

Growing up as one of four daughters in a family where her parents’ highest level of education was third grade, Albania said education was non-negotiable. Her parents were determined that all four daughters would earn master’s degrees. Homework always came first—before helping in the kitchen—and her father proudly displayed all of their diplomas at home on what he called his “Wall of Fame.”

“My parents are my heroes,” Albania said.

Currently, Albania is developing a series of instructional videos on technical topics while continuing to champion in-person training. She believes personal interaction plays a key role in effective learning and overall training success.

In addition to her work in IT, Albania has taught an evening Micro-Computer Applications course for the past 10 years. She officially joined the IT department in 1997 and was promoted to Assistant Director and Lead of the IT Training Office in 2023.
