Film & TV Career Expo Inspires Bronx Students and Community Members

The expo began with breakfast and opening remarks, warmly welcoming participants from across the borough. Professor Jeffrey Wisotsky, director of BCC’s CAS Media and Digital Film Production Program, highlighted the importance of storytelling and media in shaping culture and community. “Today is an opportunity to bring together people who share a passion for creativity and the power of media,” he said. “Our goal is simple: connect students and community members with working professionals, explore career opportunities, and help build relationships that support mentorship and professional growth.”
A highlight of the day was six career panels featuring professionals across film and television, from production to creative roles. Panelists emphasized that the industry offers opportunities for everyone – whether you are a visual thinker, wordsmith, tech enthusiast, or creative visionary. Gregory Hernandez, executive director of the Bronx Independent Cinema Center, stressed the importance of community-focused spaces for filmmakers in the Bronx. “The future of film is community,” he said. “We want to build a space where local storytellers can showcase their work, learn, and collaborate – without leaving our borough.”
The expo also included representatives from the Mayor’s Office of Entertainment, Warner Brothers, Discovery, and various industry unions, offering insight into the city’s thriving media landscape. Speakers highlighted the expanding film and television tax incentives and the growing studio presence in New York, as well as the industry’s growing demand for skilled workers and the real career opportunities it offers.
Students and attendees had the chance to ask questions, make connections, and explore potential career paths. The event also celebrated BCC’s ongoing commitment to media education, including recent funding to renovate facilities and expand opportunities for Bronx students.
By day’s end, students had a clearer sense of the paths available to them – and the inspiration and connections to start exploring them.
