BCC Partners with SUNY Education Opportunity Center and Soulful Synergy to Offer Offshore Wind Training

The eight-week program being held at BCC and offered free of charge to all members of the community (in the Bronx and surrounding areas) provides 180 hours of instruction designed to prepare participants for roles supporting the construction, installation, and maintenance of offshore wind turbines – an increasingly important component of the clean energy economy. Alongside technical training, students receive wraparound services, including career coaching and job placement support, helping to connect their training directly to employment opportunities.
Funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and initiated through support from the Green Action Challenge grant in partnership with Workforce Development, the program is delivered by industry professionals at Soulful Synergy. Participants build foundational skills in construction and workplace safety while earning industry-recognized certifications, including OSHA 30 and Green Professionals Fundamentals of Building. These credentials position graduates for a range of career pathways, from offshore wind projects to broader construction roles.
The program’s first cohort of 21 students began on March 23, 2026. Participants bring a range of experiences: some have worked in renewable energy sectors such as solar installation, while others are entering the field for the first time. This diversity reflects the program’s goal of both advancing the skills of those already in related industries and opening doors for individuals new to clean energy careers.
Prior to enrollment, candidates completed in-person interviews with the Soulful Synergy team. These sessions assessed readiness for hands-on training, as well as the ability to work collaboratively and engage in a professional environment. The selection process helps ensure that participants are prepared for the program’s rigorous, team-based approach.
As energy systems continue to evolve, offshore wind is expected to play a growing role in diversifying energy sources and strengthening long-term energy resilience. Workforce initiatives such as this partnership aim to ensure that local communities are equipped to participate in and benefit from this shift.
“We want to ensure that underrepresented communities aren’t left out of this growing industry – that everyone has the opportunity to benefit from and participate in the clean energy economy,” said Anushka Gopilall, program manager at Soulful Synergy.
Soulful Synergy, a minority-owned workforce development agency, has nearly a decade of experience connecting underrepresented communities to careers in construction, clean energy, and other high-demand sectors. The organization has partnered with government agencies, utilities, and nonprofits on workforce initiatives and has supported hundreds of individuals in securing long-term employment.
Following the launch of the initial cohort, five additional cohorts are planned. Individuals interested in participating in future sessions are encouraged to seek more information as upcoming opportunities are announced.
