Meet BCC’s 2026 Valedictorian: Jazmin Rodriguez

Jazmin Rodriguez - BCC Valedictorian 2026For Jazmin Rodriguez, the path to becoming Bronx Community College’s 2026 Valedictorian was not a straight line – It was a journey defined by persistence, growth, and a deep belief in what is possible.

A Bronx resident who emigrated from the Dominican Republic as a teenager, Jazmin arrived in the United States at 13 years old without speaking English. The transition was isolating and challenging, but it also shaped her resilience. Years later, after stepping away from college due to anxiety and life responsibilities, she made the decision to return – this time, age 29, with a renewed sense of purpose.

“Time is going to pass anyway,” she reflected. “So why not move forward while working toward something meaningful?”

At BCC, Jazmin pursued a degree in Early Childhood Education while working full time as a paraprofessional with the New York City Department of Education. Managing a demanding schedule that included work, coursework, and family responsibilities, she completed her degree  – proving that connection and community can be built even in virtual spaces.

Her experience at BCC became a turning point. Through the support of dedicated faculty and classmates, Jazmin learned

to trust herself, ask for help, and grow beyond the limits she once placed on herself. “The people here truly want to see you succeed,” she said. “That makes all the difference.”

Jazmin’s passion for working with children is deeply personal. As the oldest sibling in her family, she helped care for her younger brothers from an early age, discovering both her patience and her calling. Today, that same commitment guides her career path as she plans to continue her education and expand her impact in early childhood education.

When she was first told she had been selected as valedictorian, Jazmin admits she hesitated – not because of the honor, but because of the speech. Tackling her fear of public speaking, she ultimately embraced the role as “something else to overcome” and an opportunity to grow.

As she prepares to take the stage at Commencement, Jazmin carries with her a message shaped by her own journey: be patient with yourself, trust your path, and keep going – even when it feels difficult.

Her story is a powerful reminder that success is not defined by how quickly you arrive, but by the courage it takes to keep moving forward.
