Born in New York City and raised in the South Bronx, Mr. Chungata has built a distinguished career dedicated to advancing equity and protecting the rights of individuals and communities.

He began his legal career with the New York City Human Resources Administration, where he spent 10 years in the Office of Legal Affairs. He also represented the Commissioner of Social Services in proceedings before the New York State Supreme and Civil Courts.

Mr. Chungata later operated a solo law practice in the South Bronx, continuing his commitment to serving individuals and families in the borough.

His career then took him to the New York State Division of Human Rights, where he served as an investigator and earned several promotions. From 2016 through 2024, he served as the agency’s Long Island Regional Director, providing leadership in the enforcement of New York State Human Rights Law and advancing its mission of preventing discrimination and promoting equal opportunity.

In 2024, Mr. Chungata joined MTA Bus Company as Deputy Chief Equal Opportunity Officer, where he was responsible for Title VI and Title VII investigations, compliance and related equal opportunity matters.

In June 2026, Mr. Chungata returned to the Bronx to join BCC as Chief Diversity Officer, a role he considers the highlight of his career. In his new position, he is committed to fostering an inclusive campus environment, advancing diversity and equity, and ensuring that all members of the college community have the opportunity to thrive.

“Returning to the borough where I was raised and having the opportunity to serve the BCC community is incredibly meaningful to me,” Mr. Chungata said. “I look forward to helping build a campus where everyone feels valued, respected and empowered to succeed.”
