Program Description

The Computer Information Systems (CIS) AAS degree prepares students for entry-level employment in information technology and for continued study in a related bachelor’s degree program. The curriculum provides a practical foundation in programming, web and mobile application development, database management, computer applications, business fundamentals, and information systems.

Students combine classroom instruction with hands-on projects using programming languages, development tools, databases, and business software. They also complete a cooperative work experience and may participate in an apprenticeship, allowing them to apply what they have learned in a workplace setting.

The program offers two areas of study: the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Option and the Coding and Programming Option.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Computer Information Systems program requirements, students will be able to:

1. Apply business and information systems concepts to identify and address organizational and technology needs.

2. Develop practical solutions using programming, web and mobile development, database, and business software tools.

3. Organize, analyze, and present information using database and productivity applications, and communicate technical information clearly.

4. Demonstrate professional and ethical behavior when completing projects, working with others, and participating in supervised work experience.

Degree Options

Students must choose one 12-credit option to complete the degree: Artificial Intelligence or Coding and Programming.

Artificial Intelligence Option Description

The Artificial Intelligence Option introduces students to the use of AI in business and technology. Students study machine learning and AI tools that work with text and images, and complete a capstone project. The option prepares students for entry-level work supporting AI applications and data analysis, as well as continued study in a related field.

Option Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Artificial Intelligence Option requirements, students will be able to:

  1. Apply artificial intelligence and machine learning concepts to address a defined business or technology problem.
  2. Use AI tools to analyze text, images, and related data.
  3. Plan, develop, and present a capstone project that uses artificial intelligence, programming, and data to address a business or technology need.

Coding and Programming Option Description

The Coding and Programming Option provides hands-on preparation in programming, web and mobile applications, databases, and operating systems. Students use Python, Java, web programming tools, and Linux to build and test applications. The option prepares students for entry-level work in programming, web development, application support, and database support, as well as continued study in a related field.

Option Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Coding and Programming Option requirements, students will be able to:

  1. Design, code, test, and debug applications using Python, Java, and other programming tools.
  2. Develop client-side, server-side, and mobile applications that use databases and web technologies.
  3. Use Linux and operating system tools to support programming and application development.
