Dr. Teresa Fisher Leads BCC Senate with Communication and Clarity

  Update   •

Senate Chair - Teresa FisherBCC’s new Senate Chairperson, Dr. Teresa Fisher, began teaching Fundamentals of Interpersonal Communication in the Communication Arts and Sciences Department 15 years ago. To this day, she considers it one of the most important — if not the most important — courses students can take.

“I always recall this one student who stood up at the end of the semester and said, before he walked out, ‘When I started this class, I thought, how can we have a whole semester just talking about communication?’” Fisher said with a laugh. “Then he paused and added, ‘I had no idea there was so much to know.’”

Fisher likens her teaching to the work of an auto mechanic: “It’s like taking apart an engine to understand how all the parts work together,” she said. “We do the same with communication — taking it apart so we can understand it better, and then putting it back together in a way that makes our interactions more effective. It’s so rewarding to watch students realize how small shifts in communication can lead to big changes in their relationships and results.”

Her approach to teaching is deeply influenced by her diverse academic background. Fisher holds two master’s degrees and a doctorate in Educational Theatre, as well as an earlier master’s in Counseling and Psychology. Before joining BCC, she spent five years as a mental health counselor and registered play therapist. That experience, she said, keeps her “continually mindful of how we use language and how we work with each other to promote collaboration rather than division.”

Outside the classroom, Fisher is known for her boundless curiosity and love of learning — qualities that also make her a voracious reader. “Books are one of the best ways I know to keep exploring new ideas and perspectives,” she said. “That curiosity naturally extends into my work with colleagues and students.”

When asked what she enjoys most about BCC, Fisher doesn’t hesitate. “My colleagues are just fantastic. They’re always eager to work with and learn from one another. Even when we have differences of opinion, there’s such deep respect across the board.”

With her trademark organizational skills and communication expertise, Fisher is eager to lead the Senate through a productive and collaborative two-year term. She looks forward to working closely with the SGA, Faculty Council, and administrators to further the College’s mission and vision.

The first two Senate meetings of the academic year (September and October) set a strong tone for the year ahead, reflecting Fisher’s thoughtful and inclusive leadership style.

As she settles into her new role, Fisher remains as passionate as ever about fostering connection — whether in the classroom, across campus, or within the pages of her next great read.
