Froebel Chungata joined BCC in June as the college’s new Chief Diversity Officer, bringing more than two decades of experience in law, civil rights, equal opportunity and public service to his new role. Born in New York City and raised in the South Bronx, Chungata has built a career focused on advancing equity, protecting individual rights and serving communities.

He began his legal career with the New York City Human Resources Administration, spending 10 years in the Office of Legal Affairs. As an attorney for the City of New York, he established paternity and child support orders for children receiving benefits through the Department of Social Services and represented the Commissioner of Social Services in proceedings before the New York State Supreme and Civil Courts.

He later operated a solo law practice in the South Bronx before joining the New York State Division of Human Rights. There, he served as an investigator and advanced through several leadership positions. From 2016 through 2024, he served as the agency’s Long Island Regional Director, overseeing efforts to enforce the New York State Human Rights Law and promote equal opportunity.

In 2024, Chungata joined MTA Bus Company as Deputy Chief Equal Opportunity Officer, where he was responsible for Title VI and Title VII investigations, compliance and other equal opportunity matters. Now, he has returned to the Bronx, where he was raised, to serve at a college whose mission closely aligns with his own commitment to equity and opportunity. For Chungata, the opportunity to give back to the community where his career began makes his new role particularly meaningful.

“Froebel Chungata understands that diversity, equity and inclusion are not simply ideals; they are essential to building a stronger institution and a stronger Bronx,” said BCC President Larry D. Johnson Jr. “As we move forward with Bronx Renaissance 2031, his leadership will help us create a campus where every student, faculty member and staff member knows that they belong, that their voice matters and that they have the opportunity to thrive.”

“Returning to the borough where I was raised and having the opportunity to serve the BCC community is incredibly meaningful to me,” Chungata said. “I look forward to helping build a campus where everyone feels valued, respected and empowered to succeed.”

As Chief Diversity Officer, Chungata will work to foster an inclusive campus environment, advance diversity and equity, and help ensure that students, faculty and staff have the opportunity to thrive.

Chungata earned a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Iona College, now Iona University, in 1994 and a Juris Doctor from New York Law School in 1998. He was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1999.

He currently resides on Long Island with his wife and children.
