MLT Student Wins Scholarship
A BCC student in the Medical Laboratory Technician program has received a laboratory student scholarship for $ 1,000 from the American Society for Clinical Pathology. “I will use it for tuition,” says Tazio Whyne, now in his third semester. “I pay out of pocket.”
A native New Yorker whose family emigrated from Jamaica, Tazio came to BCC’s MLT program having already earned a bachelor’s degree in Biology at Queen’s College. ”It was not until I graduated from Queens College and started working in administration for a hospital that I discovered a possible career in medical laboratory technology. With a previous history of doing undergraduate lab research at Queens College and an interest in the clinical side of medicine, I thought MLT would be an excellent career choice.”
Tazio has high praise for the program’s director, Dr. Diane Banks. “She truly cares for every student in the Medical Laboratory Technician program. Meeting Dr. Banks was a breath of academic fresh air.”
