New Student Orientation Highlights Access, Engagement and Connection

“You belong here and your success is so important to us. We thank you for choosing to be here at BCC, and we honor your showing up as your authentic self,” said BCC President Larry Johnson in his welcome remarks. “We are committed to removing barriers that prevent you from remaining in school.”
Director of Student Life Tiffany Dubon, who emceed the convocation, echoed that message and highlighted the importance of building relationships on campus. “Our goal today is to get you acclimated – not just so you know where the buildings and resources are, but so you make a connection with somebody,” she said. “If you have questions, we will make sure to get you the answers.”
Dr. Irene Delgado, Director of Career Development, encouraged students to begin thinking about their future early. “It is never too early to start talking about your career. These conversations will determine the classes you take,” she said. “We want to see you get the job and career you want. At this college, there is an office for everything you need.”
Two BCC alumni staff members also addressed the students: Dr. Manny Lopez, Interim Vice President for Student Success, and Albania Nicasio from Information Technology.
Dr. Lopez spoke about the many resources on campus, including Health Services (BCC is one of only two CUNY colleges with a nurse practitioner on staff), as well as Veterans Services, Disability Services, Transfer Services, the Early Childhood Center, and BCC CARES. “If you stay engaged in and take in the information you are getting here, I promise it will pay dividends,” he said. “The more you engage, the more successful you will be.”
Nicasio – a proud immigrant who came to BCC in 1997 – said, “I owe everything to Bronx Community College. Thanks to BCC, I got my associate’s degree in computer science, my bachelor’s degree and my two masters degrees through CUNY. I welcome all of you and am glad you all are here at this amazing college.”
Academic Advising Manager Cheryl Walker took students through the advising process and said letting professors get to know you as a person is key. She also said that through the online Navigate system, students should be able to reach out to their advisor at all times.
The program concluded with lunch and a student resource fair. Departments across campus had tables with information.
