Men's Basketball Highlight

Our men's basketball team won its first CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) championship in 20 years, in which it secured its first ever CUNYAC division title. Head Coach Shannon McKinnon was named "Coach of the Year" in both the CUNYAC and in Region 15 of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Frederick Simpson was named 3rd Team All-American for the NJCAA in men's basketball.

Baseball Team

Congratulations to the Broncos Baseball team and their head coach Adolfo De Jesus for their stellar performance

BCC Baseball Team at Ohio Field

The Broncos Baseball team and their Head Coach Adolfo De Jesus rounded out a stellar year at Key span Park, regaining the title of CUNYAC Champions, defeating Queensborough Community College 5 – 4. Victor Lopez was named Most Valuable Player.

The Team comprised of a talented mix of freshmen and sophomores. One of the reasons given for their exceptional performance were players like freshman Emilio Bueno who pitched a perfect game to start off the season; Fausto Castillo a well-rounded sophomore who assisted his fellow teammates with the rigors of varsity athleticism; Jean Carlos Regalado a best off hitter and catcher with the potential to play at the Division I level; and Victor Lopez who exemplifies true sportsmanship and was bestowed B.C.C.’s Wilkins Henriquez Award for Outstanding Pitcher.

With so much returning talent Coach De Jesus is very optimistic about next season. Perhaps a run at Nationals is on the horizon.

Volleyball

A Superb season in the words of our brilliant Volley ball Head coach Divina Arroyo!

If I can sump up the volleyball season in one word it would be "unbelievable."  The lady Broncos finished the season with a 13-12 overall record, finishing second in the CUNYAC Conference with a 6-2 record.  This unremarkable group of young student athletes achieved this with hardly any or no experience at all in competitive volleyball.  At the end of this unbelievable journey this group of ladies achieved what had not been done in Bronx Community College.  Beat the No. 1 Sandra Izaguirre - CUNYAC MVPseeded Borough of Manhattan Community College to win the 2008 CUNYAC Championship.  It was a great gratification to have done so.  But same could not have been done without their hard work and my supporting staffs, assistant coaches Wolfgang Lucena and Teddy Gaspard and managers Pedro Arroyo and Orlando Vargas.

The expectations for the 2009 season are very promising with the return of most players and the additions of new players with the success of this year’s program.

Individual Awards:

This student athlete led the team in 3 different categories, Hitting, Digging and Ace Percentage.  She was the spark of the team's offense and defense.  Always smiling and ready for what ever we asked of her.  Very quiet but don't let her fool you because when she got into the court this student athlete was all business.  It should not be a surprise that this year's Most Valuable Player is Ms. Sandra Izaguirre.

This position player is the most pivotal in the team.  Sometimes referred as "the brain of the team," she is so important that the offense starts with this player.  Watching her progress and improve everyday was a pleasure.  That is why the 2009 Most Improved Player Award goes to Ms. Rocheska Alcantara.

Lady Broncos grab Back-to-Back CUNYAC Volleyball Championships

The Lady Broncos Volleyball team had another stellar year under the superb leadership of Head coach, Divina Arroyo and Asst. Coach Teddy Gaspard. Our ladies ended the season 8-0 in the CUNYAC Division ultimately capturing the 2009 Championship for the second year in a row, with a 5th place finish in the Region.

CUNYAC Volleyball ChampionshipsOur Lady Broncos started the season in fine form with the goal of holding onto their CUNYAC title and moving up into the Regional Playoffs. Led by returning MVP Sandra Izaguirre, B.C.C. made decisive work of their scheduled match-ups, easily qualifying for the CUNYAC Semis. At the Semi Final/Finals held at the B.M.C.C. campus our Lady Broncos quickly dispensed of last year’s rivals Queensborough Community College in three straight sets (25-9, 25-11, 25-12). The B.M.C.C. Squad proved a tougher opponent but the Broncos rallied through each set affirming their dominance with a three set win (25-19, 25-21, 25-9).

Sandra Izaguirre was again named Championship MVP heading the pack with 20 kills and 12 service aces.

Bronx Community College's Ashley Armand was the overall victor in the women's run, completing the 6,000-kilometer loop in a time of 24:41 - third fastest in race history.

BCC Cross Country Female Student Athlete

“It wasn’t my best time today,” said Armand, who was second in the NJCAA Region XV Championship race one week earlier. “But I am extremely happy and humbled by this. I don’t think it will sink in for a couple of days that I won the race today, but I will keep that in perspective as we get ready for Nationals (NJCAA Division III National Championship on November 13).”
Ashley Armand
Freshman Ashley Armand has been a hit through the first two weeks of the Cross Country season finishing second overall and pacing all Community College female runners in both races on two different courses. On September 12, in the Baruch Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, she ran a 25:40 in a 6,000 Meter (6K) race. The Martin Van Buren High School product was just four seconds off of the gold medal pace, in her first-ever collegiate race. This past weekend at Bard in beautiful Annandale-on-Hudson, she soared to a 20:34 in a 5,000 Meter (5K) event, slotting second again, only 0:13 seconds behind the winner. BCC’s Ashley Armand runs away with Community College Athlete of the Week.
