What does the Ombudsman do?

Informal Resolution

Students are encouraged to attempt to resolve complaints informally with the faculty member or to seek the assistance of the department chairperson or campus ombudsman to facilitate informal resolution.

Meet the Ombudsman

Dr. Stephen Powers serves as the Ombudsman at Bronx Community College, providing students with guidance, support, and advocacy when facing academic, financial, or personal challenges. Dr. Powers was elected as Ombudsman in 2018 and has continued serving in the role through multiple two-year terms. Throughout his service, he has worked closely with students to help them navigate college policies and procedures, resolve concerns, and connect with the appropriate campus resources.

Students often seek assistance from the Ombuds Office for matters related to academic standing, financial aid, withdrawals, communication concerns, and other situations that may impact their ability to remain enrolled and succeed at BCC. Dr. Powers works collaboratively with students, faculty, and campus departments to help identify solutions and support positive outcomes.

In addition to serving as Ombudsman, Dr. Powers is a professor in the Department of Education & Academic Literacy, where he teaches and mentors students from a variety of academic programs. His commitment to student success and support continues to help students overcome challenges and stay on track toward achieving their educational goals.
