Justice and Advocacy Alliance

The Justice & Advocacy Alliance (“Alliance” for short) is helping justice-impacted students develop a sense of belonging, reach their academic, personal, and/or professional goals, become independent learners and persist in their pursuit for higher education.

The Alliance defines “justice-impacted” broadly as any student or their immediate family member(s) (ie: parents/guardians & siblings) who have been impacted by the criminal legal system (ie: arrest, awaiting trial, convicted, probation, parole, incarceration). Students self-identify as justice-impacted to receive the support and services.

Advisory Council

The Justice and Advocacy Alliance values input from members of our community both on and off campus. Our thoughts are that it takes a village to support students. The goal of the Advisory Council is to assist the Alliance gain new insights, develop initiatives, provide advice, explore new opportunities, and to enhance the service delivery systems. Advisory Council members will help to contribute to the success of this grant-funded initiative and pave the way for additional funding. This is a voluntary position and requires a one-year commitment.

This Council will consist of thoughtful, passionate, and engaging community leaders and students. The responsibilities of Advisory Council members are to:

  • Meet once a semester
  • Be available for a few telephone calls/Zoom meetings each year from Alliance staff seeking advice.
  • Review agenda and supporting materials prior to meetings;
  • Contribute your expertise and thinking to the current and future work of the Alliance;
  • Research and discuss best practices for justice-impacted students;
  • Provide support and advice for programming, trainings, fundraising, grants, scholarships, etc…
  • Advocate for the Alliance and justice-impacted students;
  • Provide a connection to and ongoing exchange of information and ideas with external practitioners and academics in the field;
  • Allow the Alliance to publish your name and title as a member of the Advisory Council.

The Justice and Advocacy Alliance at BCC is hiring Academic Tutors

What is the Justice and Advocacy Alliance? The Justice and Advocacy Alliance (Alliance, in short) is helping justice-impacted individuals develop a sense of belonging, reach their academic, personal, and/or professional goals, become independent learners and persist in their pursuit for higher learning.

What is justice-impacted? Justice-impacted is broadly defined as any student or their immediate family members who have been impacted by the criminal legal system (for example: arrested, awaiting trial, convicted, probation, incarceration, parole, etc…).

How many hours per week? 10 hours a week during the academic semester

Hourly rate: $20.00

Tutor responsibilities:

  • Handle skill-based subject specific tutors in the area of student needs such as MATH, SCIENCE, ENGLISH (WRITING/READING), and related SOCIAL SCIENCE courses;
  • Evaluate students to measure skill progression and determine improvement areas;
  • Coordinate with faculty and Alliance staff to offer engaging contextualized learning activities;
  • Ensure attendance through mentoring, emails, phone calls, social media outreach, and in-person meetings;
  • Help students to prepare for college level coursework;
  • Record and report student progress;
  • Assist students in reading and understanding their course syllabi, assignments and class tasks;
  • Teach students how to study;
  • Assist students in advocating for their needs (ie: requesting services and support);
  • Host individual and group tutoring sessions;
  • Review tests, quizzes, assignments, etc. with students;
  • Help students communicate effectively with their faculty;
  • Provide resources for students;
  • Assist in career exploration and preparation (ie: resume, cover letter, interviewing, etc..).
  • Provide office support by answering phones and providing information about the program.
  • Calling students to inform them about programming and workshops and Institute opportunities;
  • Assist with monitoring and managing Alliance social media, website, bulletin boards, newsletter, programming;
  • Assist with monthly newsletter.
  • Office duties as assigned.
  • All tutors must participate in staff meetings, trainings, orientation, programming, career plan meetings, and other related as required.

Tutor hiring requirements:

  • Subject specific tutors in the area of student needs such as MATH, SCIENCE, ENGLISH (WRITING/READING), and related SOCIAL SCIENCE courses;
  • Earned a minimum of 12 college credits;
  • Currently enrolled in college and in good academic standing (minimum GPA – 2.5);
  • All tutors must remain in good academic standing while working for the Alliance;
  • Effectively manage time and schedules;
  • Communicate effectively, both verbal and written;
  • Maintain confidentiality of records and information;
  • Strong organizing and coordinating skills;
  • Knowledge of tutorial/learning materials and instructional aids and Microsoft Office (preferred);
  • Flexibility in the modality for tutoring (ie: virtual, in-person, hyflex);
  • Interested in working with and supporting justice-impacted individuals;
  • Justice-impacted preferred.
  • This is a one-semester position with the possibility of renewal for another semester.

What is the Justice and Advocacy Alliance? The Justice and Advocacy Alliance (Alliance, in short) is helping justice-impacted individuals develop a sense of belonging, reach their academic, personal, and/or professional goals, become independent learners and persist in their pursuit for higher learning.

What is justice-impacted? Justice-impacted is broadly defined as any student or their immediate family members who have been impacted by the criminal legal system (for example: arrested, awaiting trial, convicted, probation, incarceration, parole, etc…).

How many hours per week? 10 hours (16 weeks during the semester)

Hourly rate: $20.00

What are the duties of a peer mentor?

  • Have a caseload of incoming college freshman and ongoing students who they will mentor and assist with educational support plans;
  • Introduce yourself to relevant BCC staff and staff and introduce new students to the college community, including the library, computer lab, academic departments, and resource offices;
  • Provide advisement and counseling on how to effectively fulfill class requirements and successfully complete the semester;
  • Inform Alliance leadership of students who are having any difficulties, including those who might potentially fail classes or drop-out of school;
  • Inform students about financial aid, registration and class attendance deadlines, policies and procedures;
  • Connect with staff to assist with filling-out transfer applications; filling-out financial aid applications.
  • Assist in career exploration and connect with BCC’s Career Development Office in career preparation (ie: resume, cover letter, interviewing, etc..).
  • Regularly communicate with mentees and Institute staff/leadership.
  • Provide office support by answering phones and providing information about the program.

What is the peer mentor hiring requirements?

  • Interested in counseling, social work, or areas appropriate to client needs;
  • Sincerely care about the well-being and success of justice-impacted individuals;
  • Effectively manage time and schedules;
  • Communicate effectively, both verbal and written;

  • Strong organizing and coordinating skills;
